Conservative Columnist Calls For “Moderate” Christianity
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in General Politics, ReligionApparently John Danforth’s column “Onward Moderate Christian Soldiers”really hit home with some conservatives. I blogged about it several days ago.
The first to come out and agree with Danforth (at least that I can find) is Cal Thomas, frequent contributor to Fox News and conservative columnist. He’s penned an article that is thoughtful, respectful and seeks to find common ground…three things I love.
From the article:
Former Senator and U.N. Ambassador John Danforth has performed a valuable service between elections by writing about a Christian’s role in contemporary American society. In an op-ed for The New York Times last Friday, Danforth, an ordained minister, observed: “Many conservative Christians approach politics with a certainty that they know G-d’s truth, and that they can advance the kingdom of G-d through governmental action.”That does not mean government can’t do some things. It simply means it cannot advance a moral and spiritual agenda, because it is the church, not the state, that is commissioned to preach and observe G-d’s message.
Sure, Cal has some other quibbles about moderate Christians being okay with same-sex marriages, but it’s this type of reaching out that needs to happen.
Government is not a church, so it shouldn’t legislate like one.
Well put.
