The Truth About Iraq: Danger = Success
By Montag | Related entries in Partisan Hacks, WarA group of conservative radio talk show hosts will go to Iraq to gather evidence in support of the preconception: “American troops are winning, despite headlines to the contrary.” I’m not so sure this is the most objective way to approach the question, but here is what one of them has to say about it:
“This is not Vietnam,” [Melanie Morgan, a talk radio host for KSFO Radio in San Francisco] said. “War is war, and it’s dangerous, and the killing is taking place all of the time. At the same time, where there is danger, there is success and there is a mainstream media that is determined to shut out that success.”
Fox News: Critics Call Radio Hosts’ Trip Propaganda Mission
Ahhh, this may be the birth of a new adage: Where there is danger, there is success. If this holds true, then we truly are winning the war in Iraq. Take this account of Attourney General Gonzales’ recent trip there:
Gonzales’ visit took place under extraordinary security precautions, including a news blackout until Gonzales was safely inside the heavily fortified green zone where Iraqi and U.S. officials work.
Yet the visit almost was scrapped because bad weather temporarily grounded helicopters that were to take Gonzales and his entourage from the airport to the city. Driving the eight miles from the airport — a stretch that risks bombings and other attacks — was considered too dangerous.
Associated Press: Gonzales: FBI to aid Iraqi investigations
There is certainly danger there. And therefore success? Was the purpose of the “news blackout” during Gonzales’ dangerous commute to preempt the mainstream media’s ’shutting out’ of the implied success?
How will we know the truth about the Iraq War, if it is too dangerous for real (read: objective) journalists to do their job?
