Get Ready: Rhenquist About To Retire

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in General Politics, Supreme Court

Redstate.org has the story.

According to multiple sources inside and outside the White House, Chief Justice William Rehnquist does intend to retire from the Supreme Court prior to the new court term in October. One source I’ve spoken with said that the Chief would like to retire so that a new Chief Justice could start the term, but given O’Connor’s retirement he recognizes that might not be possible.

I certainly don’t envy the man. Imagine for a moment you’re Rhenquist. Your health is failing and you’re expecting to retire soon, but O’Connor gets out before you can make the move. Now you’re faced with an impossible situation because you know that your retirement has the potential to further split the country in two and upset the balance on the court. Again, I feel for the guy.

What would you do?
