Quote Of The Day (circa 1999)

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in History, Quotes

“Even though I’m a tranquil guy now at this stage of my life, I have nothing but contempt and anger for those who betray the trust by exposing the name of our sources. They are, in my view, the most insidious, of traitors.”
- George H. W. Bush speaking at a dedication ceremony for the George Bush Center for Intelligence

The left thinks this refers to Rove. The right thinks this refers to Wilson. Who’s correct? Care to read the whole thing and decide for yourself?

  1. Glen Wishard Says:

Bush is referring to Philip Agee, the CIA traitor who currently rots in Cuba.

Chistopher Hitchens wrote recently that Agee did not betray Welch and other CIA agents abroad, but I saw an interview with Agee not long ago where he essentially said he did expose them - only not by himself, but as a part of a group of people. He seems to think the fact that he didn’t act alone is very important.

  2. Keith, Indy Says:

Considering it was in 1999, I would say neither…

  3. the english guy Says:

Yeah, ‘99. But it’s something his son’s speechwriters will probably paraphrase.

  4. Justin Gardner Says:

Agreed that they were talking about somebody else, but start looking for it to be used more and more concerning the Rove case. My aim was to debunk it before it could gain any traction specifically for the reason Glen points out.
