Border Control + Catch And Release
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Bad Decisions, Race, Social Programs, The War On TerrorismThe Counterterrorism Blog with a look at our ridiculous border control tactics:
So far this year, the Border Patrol has apprehended some 119,000 non-Mexican illegal aliens along the SW border. That is an increase of 175% over last year, which was itself a record year for such apprehensions. What is the reason Homeland Security officials give as why they believe these numbers have risen so dramatically? Incredibly, it is the Federal Government’s own policy of “catch and release.“Catch and release refers, of course, to the policy of releasing on personal recognizance the vast majority of these non-Mexican illegal aliens after they are arrested and processed for removal proceedings. The aliens are served with “Notice to Appear charging documents and then released, often being driven in Border Patrol vehicles to the nearest bus or train stations for onward transportation to wherever they are destined. The situation has become so ridiculous that such non-Mexican illegals are actually seeking out Border Patrol agents along the border once they have made it in so they can surrender themselves, knowing full well that after a few hours of detention they will be free and on their way to the interior of the US. Exceptionally demoralized Border Patrol agents have taken to calling those charging documents “Notices to Disappear because, and here is the true insanity, some 85% of those released illegal aliens fail to appear for their subsequent removal hearing in Immigration Court.
Excuse me? Catch and release? Let’s get real here folks. You’re going to have to physically see these people go back if you want to make sure they’re not going to game the system, which they are obviously doing.
The Counterterrorism Blog has the final word:
The sad truth is there is no border control. There is border chaos that is sort of managed at varying levels. Until our political leaders recognize that hard choices need to be made and hard action needs to be taken to secure our borders, and that means real manpower and detention and swift removal of illegal aliens caught entering the country, the madness will continue and likely get worse.
We need more men. We need more money. Period.
Take some of the money we AREN’T using in Iraq and protect our borders already Mr. President!

Amen.

Face it. The US has a long, underpopulated border with a very poor country. In suburbs all over the US there is a demand for maids to clean 5,000 sf mansions and gardeners to care for multi-acre yards and construction workers to build roads wide enough for SUVs. How can we expect the border patrol to control that? What we need is more, lots more, legal immigration. That would take the pressure off the border patrol so they can catch the bad guys.

Yes, but because of our lack of vigilance, we’ve set up a class of people who are essentially slaves to our economic system. They can’t get health care. They can’t report employer’s abuse. It’s quite a shame if you ask me.
To be fair, our economy would be crippled if these workers weren’t here. So what’s the solution?

I am, alone among my (increasingly small…hmm) social set, a support of George Bush about the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. But when it comes to immigration, I switch instantly into red-faced, shoe-pounding rage mode. His feckless ass-kissing of Vicente Fox, head of a clearly (to all but the blind, excuse me, I mean, los ciegos) hostile country, makes me crazy. If you’d like both a clear description of the mess –both metaphorical and literal– of this massive invasion of the US by Mexico, read Victor Davis Hanson. His solution seems doable, at least on some other planet. I lived for 2 decades in a bilingual bicultural country and believe me…there’s no advantage to it at all.
