I am, alone among my (increasingly small...hmm) social set, a support of George Bush about the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. But when it comes to immigration, I switch instantly into red-faced, shoe-pounding rage mode. His feckless ass-kissing of Vicente Fox, head of a clearly (to all but the blind, excuse me, I mean, los ciegos) hostile country, makes me crazy. If you'd like both a clear description of the mess --both metaphorical and literal-- of this massive invasion of the US by Mexico, read Victor Davis Hanson. His solution seems doable, at least on some other planet. I lived for 2 decades in a bilingual bicultural country and believe me...there's no advantage to it at all.

Yes, but because of our lack of vigilance, we've set up a class of people who are essentially slaves to our economic system. They can't get health care. They can't report employer's abuse. It's quite a shame if you ask me.

To be fair, our economy would be crippled if these workers weren't here. So what's the solution?

Face it. The US has a long, underpopulated border with a very poor country. In suburbs all over the US there is a demand for maids to clean 5,000 sf mansions and gardeners to care for multi-acre yards and construction workers to build roads wide enough for SUVs. How can we expect the border patrol to control that? What we need is more, lots more, legal immigration. That would take the pressure off the border patrol so they can catch the bad guys.
