Oh, and then the speculation begins…

That kind of tough talk has people suggesting Armstrong’s next move will be a run for governor of Texas. He laughs off those rumors and insists his top priorities are his family and the cancer cause.

He’s inspired millions of Americans to wear yellow Livestrong bracelets, so he has a base. “Lance showed everybody that willpower matters,� says Giorgio Andretta, a Charlotte, N.C. bicycle importer who traveled to the Champs-Elysées to catch Armstrong’s last win. And his home state of Texas will elect a governor next year. “Never say never,� Armstrong told TIME about his political ambitions. “I’m a fighter, and I do have certain beliefs. I don’t think I’m truly cut out for it, but if people want it in ten years, who knows?�

    I seriously doubt that Lance would be competitive as a gubernatorial candidate next year. He barely graduated from high school and has been a full-time athlete for 20 years. I think he recognizes this himself, given him “maybe in 10 years” comment.

    His performance in non-cycling activities over the next few years will show whether he has the kind of skills necessary to be a successful politician. I doubt it, but that’s no disgrace to merely be a 7-time Tour winner.
