Other religions besides Christianity practice immersion, annointing, or baptism. Ritual baptism and bathing was part of Artemis cults in ancient Athens. I don't think the Christians can rightfully claim a trademark on that practice (or any other in the litany, such as eating the god).

"If I were a national Baptist leader I might be considering a big, fat lawsuit ..."

I have thought the something similar myself, but your suggestion is more workable. Baptist is a narrower brand than Christian, and the suit might have some legs.

Well, if this religion of Phelps's isn't Christian, why continue to call the church Westboro Baptist? (For that matter, why call it a church at all, but a temple or something? I suppose Phelps could still call himself a Reverend, in the same vein as the Nation of Islam's Rev. Louis Farrakhan.)

If I were a national Baptist leader I might be considering a big, fat lawsuit against Phelps right about now, for defaming the Baptist denomination by continuing to spew its unadulterated hate under the Baptist name.
