More Killings in Haiti

By Montag | Related entries in The World, United Nations

I have noted here before the unrest in Haiti. Saturday, there were more killings there, this time in the Port-au-Prince slum of Martissant. This time it was “hooded police and individuals with machetes” attacking “bandits” with machetes. “Everybody gathered to watch the [soccer] game, suddenly the police surrounded the area and ordered everyone to lie [...]

Is John McCain Intelligently Designing a Presidential Campaign?

By Montag | Related entries in General Politics

Arizona Senator John McCain isn’t running for president. Not yet, anyway. He isn’t running for the job – officially. That won’t happen, if it happens at all, until after next year’s midterm elections. McCain, who turns 69 on Monday, said “there’s no point” in formally announcing his candidacy until after the 2006 congressional elections. Unlike [...]

Instapundit On SUVs

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Economy, Environment

This is a great read about the much maligned vehicle. Personally, I don’t see a future where I’ll own one, especially given the high gas prices. I know of other types of cars that can accomodate youngsters (if kids are in my future) and keep them entertained. But what I want to know is, when [...]

Two Questions I Wish I Could Have Back

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Blogging, History, Media

Shaun Daily asked me two questions last hour when I was on his radio program that sort of stumped me: 1) What’s the most exciting news out of Kansas City, MO? 2) If you could have Donklephant report on any political event in history, what would it be and why? So then… 1) The state [...]

Another Cool Picture: Solar Wind Blast

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Kitchen Sink, Science

Here’s the explanation from CNET: On Monday, Aug. 22, a pair of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, blasted off the sun and headed toward Earth. A CME is a huge bubble of plasma that’s ejected from the sun’s corona over the course of several hours. Disturbances of the Earth’s magnetic field (geomagnetic storms) and auroras [...]

British Muslims: Not In Our Name, Omar

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in The War On Terrorism, The World

I’ve blogged about the terrorist apologist Omar Bakri Mohammad (OBM) before, and detailed his love affair with the British social system. Here’s a taste of from that previous post: He receives £331.28 a month in incapacity benefit and £183.30 a month in disability living allowance because of a leg injury he suffered in his teens. Eden Again – Good News Out Of Iraq

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Environment, The World, War

During ’90s, Saddam drained one of the most beautiful environmental gems in Iraq to get back at the Marsh Arabs who opposed him. The marshlands occupy and area that’s bigger than the Everglades, but they were reduced by 90 percent. Originally, millions lived in the marshland and the area also produced a lot of Iraq’s [...]

Frist, the bad news: The U.S. Army (search) will miss its recruiting goals this year but will be able to sustain troop levels in Iraq over the next four years, a high-ranking general told FOX News. A ‘Theoretical’ Right

By Montag | Related entries in Foreign Policy, The World

I was glad to see the headline: US says N.Korean right to nuke power no deal-breaker. NK’s nuclear weapons program must stop. I have been discouraged by the fact that there is no good way to separate the potential of nuclear energy from the potential to make nuclear weapons. So I was heartened by the [...]

Iran Even Further From Nuclear Capabilities?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Foreign Policy, The War On Terrorism, The World

From the Washington Post comes news about Iran’s weapons programs: Traces of bomb-grade uranium found two years ago in Iran came from contaminated Pakistani equipment and are not evidence of a clandestine nuclear weapons program, a group of U.S. government experts and other international scientists has determined. “The biggest smoking gun that everyone was waving [...]

Poverty Bites

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Health Care, Social Programs

Malcolm Gladwell, author of the best selling books The Tipping Point and Blink, points out an interesting correlation between poor dental health and poor people: People without health insurance have bad teeth because, if you’re paying for everything out of your own pocket, going to the dentist for a checkup seems like a luxury. It [...]

Saudi Tourism

By Callimachus | Related entries in Comedy, Religion, Satire, The World

The Religious Policeman is funny enough to do stand-up. You’re not reading him? You don’t know what you’re missing. He casts a glittering eye on his native Saudi Arabia, which presents a fat target for his sense of humor. When he’s not funny, he tells stories that can be outright tragic. But when he’s doing [...]

The word on the grip reaper’s cloak is “Extremism.” Lest you get the impression that there are no propagandists at work in the Arab/Muslim world against terrorism and jihadism, MEMRI has collected a set of recent political cartoons on the topic. Granted, most of these are from publications overseen by, if not outright controlled by, [...]

Michael Graham Fired For Anti-Islam Comments

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Good Decisions, Media, Religion

He called the religion of Islam a “terrorist organization”. He would not back down. He was canned. I first wrote about Michael Graham and it sparked a firestorm of comments. At that time he had been suspended from his program for making what I thought were provably false claims, considering that Islam is a religious [...]

Funding Blocked For Faith-Based Organization

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in General Politics, Money, Religion

This is pretty interesting. Apparently a faith-based group was using federal funds to promote their religion, so the administration pulled the funds. They claim they weren’t. Representatives of the Pennsylvania-based nonprofit describe Silver Ring Thing as a “faith-based” group but dispute charges it has commingled its public funds with religious activities. “Any religious teaching that [...]
