Were Communications Cut? And Why?
By Montag | Related entries in Hurricane KatrinaPresident of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana Aaron Broussard said this on Meet the Press Sunday:
“. . . Yesterday–yesterday–FEMA comes in and cuts all of our emergency communication lines. They cut them without notice. Our sheriff, Harry Lee, goes back in, he reconnects the line. He posts armed guards on our line and says, ‘No one is getting near these lines.’”
I find this extremely troubling. If true, this goes beyond incompetence or lack of leadership. Far beyond. Beyond the pale.
I cannot wrap a clear head around this until a few questions are answered.
- Were all of Jefferson Parish’s emergency communication lines cut?
- Were all of Jefferson Parish’s emergency communication lines cut by the FEMA? Without notice?
- If the answer to #2 is “yes,” then: What on Earth for?
- If the answer to #1 or #2 is “no,” what happened to Jefferson Parish’s emergency communication lines?
Any eyewitnesses? Any video, even if it just shows the Sheriff Department guarding the lines? Let me know when there is enough information to become enraged.

This is the first I’ve heard of this, Duncan, but, judging from the incredible incompetencies already witnessed, I’d say it has a good chance of being true. What blows my mind is that everyone points at George Dubya as if he were solely responsible. But, if you look at the facts, it’s quite clear that it’s been a b***s up right from the lowest levels up to the top. The only thing that allows me to retain my faith in American efficiency is the speed with which they’re restoring things now. They are an incredible people.

I must say that I love Harry Lee. This is exactly how he handles everything. I personally think FEMA is confused about what sort of emergency they’re facing, but I tend to be paranoid. However, FEMA’s history involves more than natural disasters, which might explain some of their actions.

Explains their actions? Cutting emergency lines? I don’t think anything can explain that adequately enough…

I think it was explain as in ’shed some light on’ rather than explain as in ‘excuse.’ Ergo I can agree with both of you.
I too am a sucker for a good “conspiracy”, N.Mallory.
I too am appalled by what apparently happened here, the english guy.

Ah, well then that does seem better. In fact when you think about it, with the more militant Homeland Security now in control yes, it does shed more light on that.
