More Trouble in DeLay’s Vicinity

“You got corruption in my politics!”
Reuters reports:
The indictments, five in all, accuse Texans for a Republican Majority, or TRMPAC, and the Texas Association of Business (TAB) of illegally funneling corporate donations into a 2002 campaign to win control of the Texas Legislature.
A political action committee started by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay stands indicted for “…the misuse of corporate money to influence Texas elections…”
DeLay (to somebody in his office): “Quickly! Release a statement!”
Statement from DeLay’s office: “Today’s announcement is limited to a political organization and does not affect Mr. DeLay[.]”
Of course, the statement is meant to point out that Tom DeLay hasn’t been indicted personally. But this is politics, baby. It all affects you. You’re affected by it. Happy affectation, Tom.
Unlike chocolate and peanut butter, corruption and politics don’t taste good together.

Hopefully someday Tom Delay will be frogmarched from Washington to a federal penitentiary where he belongs. The bug killer from Texas is the epitome of dirty politics.

The Texas law being used by this prosecutor has a provision for donations to the Republican Party in DC if it is used for covering office expenses. Delay claims to have donated an amount that falls in this catagory.
§ 253.104. Contribution to Political Party
(a) A corporation or labor organization may make a contribution from its own property to a political party to be used as provided by Chapter 257.
(b) A corporation or labor organization may not knowingly make a contribution authorized by Subsection (a) during a period beginning on the 60th day before the date of a general election for state and county officers and continuing through the day of the election.
( c ) A corporation or labor organization that knowingly makes a contribution in violation of this section commits an offense. An offense under this section is a felony of the third degree.
§ 257.002. Requirements Relating to Corporate or Labor Union Contributions
(a) A political party that accepts a contribution authorized by Section 253.104 may use the contribution only to:
(1) defray normal overhead and administrative or operating costs incurred by the party; or
(2) administer a primary election or convention held by the party.
(b) A political party that accepts contributions authorized by Section 253.104 shall maintain the contributions in a separate account.
Both parties, as I have seen, kept the donations in separate accounts. You may still see the Delay check on “Smoking Gun.”
The prosecutor claims there was a deal to have the DC crowd pay back to Texas the same amount for candidates in Texas elections. He says there is a “letter” that lays out the deal but so far has not provided it to the public. I would think he would do that and end speculation.
Delay would like a speedy trial but so far all we have is money laundering accusations aganst Delay and the hope for a witness to turn against Delay which has not panned out for the prosecutor.
