Trouble in Cindyland
By Callimachus | Related entries in Bad Decisions, Hurricane Katrina, In The News, Partisan HacksSometimes those who think anyone could do a better job helping hurricane victims than the “racist” Bush Administration have to try it out to discover life isn’t that simple. And leftist anti-war triumphalism has a way of vanishing overnight.

Listen, I’m no Sheehan fan, and I’m certainly not a Moore supporter anymore, but you’re linking to something that says this?
Yeah, like the Republicans overthrew Gray Davis? Give me a break…
Simply put, this author made a couple phone calls. Is the information true? I certainly don’t know, but the rhetoric is WAY over the top and the site has three links on it, two of which are to Ann Coulter and Lucianne Goldberg.
This hardly seems like a balanced story. In fact, it seems to be just the sort of hearsay you decry on a daily basis here.
Any more information to back this story up is needed for me to even begin to consider it valid.

It’s not a story, it’s a blog post, most of which is a verbatim of the Moore/VFP’s own words (or self-removal thereof). It’s not hearsay if you’re quoting what’s been put in print.

I’m not seeing Coulter and Goldberg linked in the post I linked to. Am I missing something?
September 20th, 2005 at 9:24 am
True, it’s not a story, but I just think it’s a pretty harsh, partisan attack. Especially the language I highlighted.
And Coulter and Goldberg aren’t linked in the actual post. On the right hand column they’re in the author’s blog roll. At the very bottom.

Well, if you’re going to knock people out for blogrolls, I’d be disqualified, too, since I link to both Kos and LGF, both highly partisan.
Frankly, there are some stories, mostly dealing with the “bad boys” of either the left or the right, that are ignored by the home team. If you want to learn about, say, the legal and ethical woes of Air America, you have to go to the right side to read about them. Same with the faint odor of scammery and moralistic snake oil that emmanates from the camp around Mother Sheehan.
Of all the sites I’ve seen that addressed that issue, in the context of the hurricane relief boondoggle, this one seemed least partisan. Probably 80 percent of the text was the words of the Moore and Sheehan people themselves highlighted to call attention to the petards they were hoisting themselves on.
You should see some of the others. If that’s the bar for “partisan,” it seems to be it’s set awfully low.

Hardly. Your LGF/Kos combo balances out. Sure, those sites are highly partisan, but they’re from opposite ends of the political spectrum. You’re simply acknowledging that they can have value. Not so for the site you linked to.
In any event, I agree about the Air America story. I think I’ll write up a roundup of what’s happening so far with that, since it does deserves some more middle of the road coverage.
Least partisan? Really.? You can’t see how their language was pretty pointed? I mean, I understand your point that 80 percent of the text was from those other two, but the 20% that wasn’t was extremely caustic, as I highlighted in my first comment. As you know, sometimes a story or post can turn on a single phrase. For me, that post turned on several phrases.
In any event, understand that mine was simply a reaction to some pretty harsh partisan rheotric that I didn’t feel does any injustice to the conversation.

If the alternative is to enter a story via a partisan site, or ignore the story till someone non-partisan writes it, I know which position I prefer.
You could have read the S&L quote you singled out as in the main ironic, since it began with an obvious untruth “Everybody is saved ….”
But frankly the notion that many people in these organizations are so rabid they don’t care if they are serving the interests of terrorists — as long as they’re also getting in their shots at the prez — or that they’re interested in overturning the result of the last presidential election by any means necessary may be incendiary, but it hardly is an unreasonable conclusion.
In fact, I’d make that conclusion based on cases I know personally.
And I think it’s a wrong path for us to have to perform some sort of political trigonometry on everyone’s blogrolls before allowing a link from here to there.

Justin,
While I applaud your interest in conformation, I have seen nothing on S&L that wasn’t pulled straight off VFP, MM or any of the other sites they quote. Because of the right tilt of the predominance of the posters I would expect anyone not drinking the kool-aid of either side to want afformation to the data, but they aren’t writing the stories….a few snide comments, but hey I have been to KoS and DemUnderground….I think these people are tame compared to, but I am not going to go into that in great depth. Nor am I going to try and “convince” you of anything, no matter my feeling on the voractiy….thats your job…make your own decisions as I have and then boogie on. I would offer this to you as a thing that made me say hmmmm and you would find upon deeper inspection of the S&L blog….a ton of stuff they have posted that WAS on those previously mentioned site is now conspicuously gone. Makes me think they may be on to something….but you decide. We are all just viewing the spectacle anyway….the real “McCoy” so to speak is that somehow this info got out, the authorities are investigating and if true the responsible parties will be punished. So enjoy.

PS….you might want to check out some of the other incredible info glenaed by these folks. All from the VFP, MM, political Switchboard, etc. I especially liked the one on the 14 unwanted babies they “rescued”. Please don’t let their acerbic tone and link to skinny lil Ann Coulter cause you to dismiss them out of hand. I actually think that some of the boards and blogs they have been pulling from are reading them because it is funny that sometimes within minutes the “site is down” or the posts are gone. Now you may call some of this heresay as you can’t now go to the site and find these comments, but at the time they were and may still be cached in google.
Nice site….see ya round the blogosphere

Oh, I don’t question that the majority of it is from the VFP and the like. I don’t think anybody’s making up the blockquotes. But that’s not the point I’m trying to make.
My point is that what we’re seeing at Sweetness and Light (SaL) are obviously partisan commentators commenting and guessing (yes…guessing) about pictures and what they seem to be doing in them. They’ve barely talked to anybody, and those they have claimed to talked to, they provide no proof they have. These are the same commentators who slam the VFP crowd for not producing photographs of the things they’ve claimed to do. Kind of like the pot calling the kettle black.
I don’t doubt that things are chaotic with the VFP, but we’re talking about a bunch of people throwing their resources together to go down and try to help. And they ARE down there. The photographs prove at least that.
I would just hope we all wait to see what actually happens, instead of what this blog is trying to guess from pictures the VFP has and has not posted. Also, call me naive about the 14 babies claim, but Just because somebody doesn’t have a picture of it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Because that is SaL’s claim.
I’m more than willing to admit they VFP lied, but I’m also more than willing to admit they haven’t.
Until we get all the facts in I think we should wait and see. For the sake of reasoned debate, I think we owe the situation at least that.

I have to say you asked for it…..I think you are extremely naive if you think for a second that camping in a ditch and putting up some crosses keeps you on the front page of virtually every major newspaper in America and garners NIGHTLY reports by CNN, MSNBC, and others with reporters on site….hell Rita Cosby and that guy from the Mole were broadcasting live from the ditch, that as they claimed….not the cons at S&L but they claimed…..that not ONE WORD of it would have reached something other than the blogosphere? C’mon now…I am for fair play, but jeez this is a little over the top. I am willing to wait and see what shakes out from the investigations about the money, food and supplies, but I must say that what I have read from their own websites and the blogs they have been posting on, the folks at S&L’s assessments can’t be that far from the truth. Sure maybe they are taking snide potshots at them, but I tend to either ignore the commentary and stick to the “meat” or allow them their fun. Remember these people(VfP and other left leaning orgs) have taken a position of moral superiority over the Bush Admin and conservs in general and the old saying, “Oh how the mighty have fallen” seems fairly apropos in this instance….so they crow a bit….not like you are seeing this on the MSM and these folks ferretted it out and are “talking a lil smack”….big deal in my eyes. When the shoe was supposedly on the other foot….MM finding W looking like a deer in the headlights when told about planes crashing into the WTC, he made a few million dollars off a movie and you couldn’t swing a dead cat without hitting somebody gloating about that. I think them taking shots now is timid compared to.
I will leave you with this…..Fox runs footage of Ted Kennedy walking up and smacking Bush straight in the face, but because the reporter says “look at that fat bloviating tub of lard Kennedy taking a pot shot at Bush”, you deny that he got bopped? I think if you look beyond the commentary you will find that these people have uncovered so much info that would have NEVER come to light….hell it has them (VfP et. al.)beginning to infight and point fingers, delete claims, airbrush out any mention of certain orgs and shut down entire websites……I would think you could allow them their couple of minutes to gloat.
Just my take tho….Have a great day and an even better tomorrow.
