Hey Big Spenders…
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Cartoons, EconomyIf our Republican led government keeps choosing to spend billions upon billions that we don’t have, then don’t be surprised if they find how much it really costs come November 2006.
From the Opinion Journal:
This isn’t all Katrina’s fault. Republicans have been kidding themselves for years that they are still the stewards of fiscal conservatism and limited government. The Medicare prescription drug plan is just one example. Run down the list of the some 80 federal entitlements–including Medicare, Medicaid, farm subsidies, Pell Grants and so much more–and it becomes clear that little has been done to take these massive programs off of spending autopilot. Welfare reform and Freedom to Farm in the 1990s were nice, but what has the GOP done lately? In many cases Republicans have ramped up spending and then bragged about it.
Do I think basic Medicare, Medicaid or Pell Grants should be cut? No.
But farm subsidies? Yes, and some fairly diverse voices agree with me on this one.
And the new Medicare prescription drug plan?
Absolutely, especially since it has ballooned from the original $400 billion price tag to $700 billion, but only AFTER it was approved. This is still a pretty big black mark on the Administration’s credibility if you ask me.
Listen, I’m not a fiscal conservative. I think government can spend money and make a difference. But this is “war time”, so shouldn’t we be making some sacrifices instead of continuing to bleed money at a pace we simply can’t afford?

It’s not that they’re spending it but how they’re spending it.
Katrina became a big fat contract for Haliburton.
Medicare benefitted the drug and insurance companies, bringing them closer together.
Next on the agenda is to eviscerate public education and privatize it. These Repuglicans (and many Democrabs) are at the behest of capitalists who make the robber barons of the 1800s look like Karl Marx.
