This photo (online here) is labeled as an “undated handout combination image released September 27, 2005 by the Royal Society,” and is said to show “the first photographs of a live giant squid in its natural environment, taken by Japanese scientists in the Pacific Ocean.”

Cool! Except the last frame in the panel seems to have been taken in a sushi kitchen.

Squid is the poor man’s abalone - about a tenth the price and a lot easier to clean and prepare. Fortunately for this species, the flesh is full of ammonia, more than humans can stand.

That’s good to know. I always avoid the octopus at sushi places, out of guilt. I watch them in the Baltimore aquarium. They are the most aware, deliberate and thoughtful creatures there. I only say that intuitively, but don’t be surprised if we someday read that they are as clever as ravens.

That and the meat is kind of leathery.

Minsuh at Two Sheets to the Wind has her own photograph of this impressive creature. =P

I just keep wanting to write a headline like, “Scientists Discover Mysterious Majestic Denizen of the Deep, Rip Its Arm Off.”
