Senators Or Stock Market Gurus?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in General Politics, Money

Apparently it’s both, and that has some people whispering “insider trading.”
From the New Yorker:
Last year, Alan Ziobrowski, a professor at Georgia State, headed the first-ever systematic study of politicians as investors. Ziobrowski and his colleagues looked at six thousand stock transactions made by senators between 1993 and 1998. Over that time, senators beat the market, [...]

Oh, This Should Be a Big Help

By Callimachus | Related entries in General Politics, Partisan Hacks

Barbara Boxer’s new Beltway novel is out, and it explains why some of us become conservatives and some of us become liberals.

In fact, the book could almost be read as a primer on a certain pessimistic view held by some coastal Democrats, who see a far-off middle America as a conservative backwater one that [...]

Iranian Meltdown

By Denise Best | Related entries in Blogging, The World

Israel is a “disgraceful blot” that should be “wiped off the map”
You know, Iran’s leadership is sure softing up in its view on Israeli relations …
Prudence would suggest these comments be taken seriously and a proper response be made ideally by the international community.
“I think it reconfirms what we have been saying about the [...]

Picking Priorities

By Denise Best | Related entries in General Politics, In The News

Yes, the Plame case reports keep coming in fast and furious.
Does a media frenzy that is in a continual state of frenzy eventually turn itself into a black hole?
Officials described a White House on edge. “Everybody just wants this week over,” said one official.
The key figures in the probe, including Rove [...]

2,000…53…55…6,200

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Bad Decisions, Military, Money, War

You probably already know about 2000 & 53. Certainly not heartening numbers, but they’re expected.
And because of those numbers, we arrive at 55. Fuzzy math? Hardly. This has been coming for a while.
However, can you figure out what 6,200 stands for?
Read about it and tell me what you think.
Personally, I’m outraged.

Cheney Still Wants CIA Above The Torture Law

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Bad Decisions, The War On Terrorism

McCain’s amendment passed. Dick Cheney apparently wasn’t pleased.
That’s why Cheney is floating a “modest” proposal:
The Bush administration has proposed exempting employees of the Central Intelligence Agency from a legislative measure endorsed earlier this month by 90 members of the Senate that would bar cruel and degrading treatment of any prisoners in U.S. custody.
The proposal, which [...]

Indictments Tomorrow

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in General Politics, Law, The War On Terrorism, War

Here we go people. Get ready for the circus to come to town.
From The Washington Note:
An uber-insider source has just reported the following to TWN (since confirmed by another independent source):
1. 1-5 indictments are being issued. The source feels that it will be towards the higher end.
2. The targets of indictment have already received their [...]

One more step forward has presumbly been made in the process of establishing a constitutional government in Iraq.
A majority of voters approved the constitution in the nationwide referendum held on Oct. 15, the officials said. But the vote was sharply divided along ethnic and sectarian lines. The biggest support came from Shiites and [...]

By Denise Best | Related entries in General Politics, In The News

In all the fervor to catch, create, or at the very least imply Bush administration transgressions, let’s not lose sight of the role of the special prosecutor.

Legislating From The Pharmacy

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Religion, Science

I didn’t realize that pharmacists can refuse to give women the morning after pill if it’s against their personal beliefs.
Apparently, neither did young Tucson woman who was raped. She spent three days searching for the pill, and finally found it, but the person on duty wouldn’t dispense it because of their religious beliefs.

Cheney Definitely Part Of Leak Scandal

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Breaking News, General Politics, The War On Terrorism, War

Wow. This could be a lot bigger than we all thought.
Libby’s meeting notes essentially tell the story that Cheney told him that Plame was a C.I.A. agent. However, Libby has never told the prosecutors anything about this. That’s probably why he’s facing perjury charges.
