But I'd be pretty unhappy. Like Walmart does to the mom-and-pops' local grocer or drug store, McDonalds does to the locally owned cafeteria (killing all local flavor and replacing it with homogenized corporatism). They do to the culture what their food does to the body -- kills it. Economically, though, there are price advantages to the consumer due to the efficiencies of size. In the United States, McDonalds is a prized consumer of the lowest strata of the labor market. In France, where unemployment is at 10%, due to labor laws conceived under the influence of gargantuan amounts of hashish, the French should simply be kissing Ronald McDonald’s ass for trying to employ anyone. Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin’s recent plan, as of September 1st, takes marginal steps in sobering-up the labor laws, but I don’t think nearly enough. The rest of the plan is to trim-up the government by creating large new government housing and transportation projects to employ the unemployed, which are unemployed because employing people in France is a good way to go broke. I wonder why they are rioting? It must be the 35 hours work week or mandatory 6 week paid vacation or the despicable bigotry of the right-wing Christian French population against Muslims?
