Bull Moose, Democrats And Tough Love
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in General PoliticsAs is often the case, the Moose is spot on:
There is only one force that can save the Republican Party and it is called the Democratic Party. The truth of that axiom has been reinforced over the past three weeks. When the President was plummeting in the polls, the Democratic cavalry came riding to the rescue. Rather than calling for a success strategy in Iraq, the donkey opted for pessimism and defeatism. The Democrats overreached and now the President is rebounding.Perhaps, Karl Rove will send Leader Pelosi, Chairman Dean and Leader Reid delicate and finely-crafted Christmas ornaments. Gratitude demands it.
And now, some in the party, incredibly including the Senate Minority Leader are making it inhospitable for their former Vice Presidential standard bearer, Joe Lieberman. Here’s some news for them – they are not only telling Joe that the Democratic Party does not have room for his views, they are also communicating to millions of Americans who might support this war or not, but find defeat unacceptable, that they are not welcome in this exclusive political club. There are some progressive hawks in this country, but it is unlikely that they will pull the Democratic lever with the message that it is being sent by the leaders of the party.
In other words, get it together Dems or don’t be surprised if 2006 doesn’t offer the electoral joy-pop you were expecting.

That’s the way I see it. I felt the most comfortable with Lieberman of all the candidates in ‘04. I think the Democratic pull out offensive is ill judged and ill timed. And it is extreme enough to still hurt them in ‘08. What Bush and Lieberman say about what is happening in Iraq fits a lot more closely what the soldiers and the close in observers who are actually reporting the military and political campaigns in Iraq – people like Bill Roggio or some Iraqi bloggers – than what the Dems are saying. Murtha’s ‘broken’ and Kerry’s ‘terrorizing women and children’ sound more like descriptions of their experience in the 70s than what is happening now. The Dems were doing fine too. Old ‘unforced error’ George was really helping them out. Sitting like a big dummy in Crawford giving Sheean all the sound bites, flying over rather than into the aftermath of Katrina, and then – gotta love it – Harriet Meires. A hat-trick. Well, its tit for tat. Hat-trick for hat-trick. Murtha, Kerry, Dean.
