Glenn Beck on CNN

Wow — Glenn Beck with his own show on CNN?

*Looking at calendar on wall*

Well, it’s not April’s Fool Day, so it must be true …

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on January 17 that CNN’s Headline News has hired Glenn Beck — a nationally syndicated radio host known for making controversial statements — “for a new prime time program.”

I wonder what Larry King is going to say about this?

Is this another example of “Foxification” of the media? Like Scarborough and Tucker Carlson on MSNBC; programming that reflects a more conservative viewpoint to compete with Foxnews’ dominance of 24hr cable-news.

A term coined by Brian C. Anderson in “South Park Conservatives”

  2. ford4x4 Says:

Looks like CNN wants to change their image. Maybe they are tired of getting their ass kicked by Fox. I really don’t understand it. I mean, I like Fox’s shows (O’Reilly, H&C) but their news coverage sucks. They just cover the same 3 or 4 stories all day long.

MSNBC tried this with Dennis Miller, but it didn’t work for some reason. Miller was a South Park Conservative, but I wouldn’t say Glenn Beck is.

  3. Justin Gardner Says:

What kind of conservative is Beck? A Michael Savage wannabe? This move by CNN is dumb, dumb, dumb. The most trusted name in news? Yeah…maybe they were…

And FYI, the term South Park Conservatives is actually pretty flawed because neither of the creators of South Park are conservative or political.

  4. Whootziedude Says:

What kind of conservative is Beck? No he is not a Savage wannabe, he is nothing like Hannady, O’Reilly, or anyone else you want to pigeonhole him to be. Maybe Dennis Miller was the closest, except he’s much funnier.

And this show is likely a smart move by CNN, making them a more trusted name in news. Remember that FOXNews has risen to its ratings because so many saw the left slant of other news agencies. If CNN is seeing the wisdom of claiming a balance between the current options, I see it as a smart manuveur.

  5. Jimmy the Dhimmi Says:

When interviewed for Mr. Anderson’s book, Trey Parker said:

“I hate conservatives, but I REALLY, REALLY hate liberals”

  6. Joe Spinelli Says:

Who in the hell had the dumb idea to hire Glenn Beck? He has one talent. He talks fast. He has no idea what comes out of his silly, sophomoric mouth. He talks fast and says negative, “controversial” things to get his toe in the radio talk game. He has no knowledge about anything that is going on internationally, nationally, in politics or economics, but he forges ahead with the dumbest statements one will ever hear. That CNN would stoop so low as to hire this idiot shows that the name of the game, as if I never knew this, is attracting listeners or viewers to make the advertisers happy. New and honesty are sacrificed so that advertisers can pay CNN more bucks. Beck is a symbol of what has happened to America. No wonder the world hates us. Listen to what Beck and his ilk say. They are uneducated, uncultured, and selfish. Their brand of Americanism is one molecule deep. They have no idea how the youth of America are suffering overseas and (perhaps if Bin Laden is right) will be suffering at home. Michael Savage is another Glenn Beck clone or vice-versa. Both of these two big mouths mimic Limbaugh, Hannity, and O’Reilly. They are in business to incite the public with outrageous statements pulled out of their butts. Shame on CNN. Shame on CNN. I hope your stock tumbles and you go out of business. This type of “news” shenanigan is what is leading to the decline of the USA at home and abroad. Our greatest days are behind us. and you are leading the way to further destruction. Just go to hell.

Spinelli spouts the typical, subjective, pessimistic, unconstructive, leftist critcism that only justifies the need for the very entities he attempts to discredit. Notice it is easier to attack the personalities than to make intelligent points to counter their views? And as far as the decline of the USA at home and abroad - well, I would never suggest one to go to hell, but I would suggest one to try living anywhere else but here while I stay and enjoy the greatest country on the face of the earth. Between all the jealous indignations of the other country’s feelings on us, be sure to cringe when you slowly figure out that we are tallying victory after victory for Democracy in the Middle East. Also be sure that you remain silent on offering any real solutions, just continue to put those who do through the ringer.

  8. Joe Spinelli Says:

Whootziedude himself reflects the fools who fall for the neocon blarney. I listen to the rightwing talk show idiots all the time to see how they always-ALWAYS–spin the news to the right. They are not journalists. There is no need for loud-mouth filters to present the news of the day. No one with any semblance of fairness ever calls on Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, etc. for a serious discussion of issues of the world and country. Watch The Lehrer Report if you want real “fair and balanced” news. Issue are discussed by all sides until the issue is fully presented. How can the rightwingers cover an issue when they encourage loud shouting on “breaking news” then after the parties have yelled at each other or over each other, the giddy hosts have to take the inevitable break for a commercial. So what rules the discussion? A commercial break? Not the issue under “discussion” or as they like to say “debate.” If you think that democracy is raging all over the Middle East then you are woefully ignorant of geography, history, and culture. You listen too much to Dubya. Listen to his own field commanders. Listen to returning military. We will have to creep out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Are you prepared to pay for that war for the rest of your mortal life? And if democracy is the ploy used to inject Dubya’’s idea of how the world should look, let’s look again at geography. What about Africa? Are they all democracies there? Hardly. Yet we cherry-pick our wars to pay off party supporters and the, yes, it is real, THE INDUSTRIAL-MILITARY COMPLEX. Listen to what Eisenhower said. Get real. Stop all of your blustering phoney hollow “patriotism,” which we know is the last refuge of a scoundrel. I love this country too much–and have been around the world–to abandon it to the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, and, yes, to you, too. The USA is still a great nation but it is losing its influence and prestige. People around the globe judge us by what we say and do, not by our many charitable habits. Let the USA be great again as it used to be when I roamed the world.

  9. Whootziedude Says:

Much better on presentation of facts, Joe. Still a little heavy on the name calling and subjective insults but you at least included facts, which, like it or not, SOME of the “neocon” talk show host do present amongst all the yelling and commercail breaks. I agree that the Leher Report does give a more balanced view than any of the pundits you mentioned. I also agree that Hannity and Limbaugh analyze the facts with a heavy right spin. Likewise, Moore and others have influenced some people’s idea of truth about the war with a spin, but in doing so, he has also brought light to some facts not uncovered by mainstream media. So that’s all I’ll defend him, Hannity (who has mastered the art of cutting people off for the “hard break”), and Limbaugh (to be admired by me only as an innovator, but he is so Moore’s alter image, or vice versa). My original point was only to say that I find the criticism of CNN getting Beck in to be rash. To lump him in with others is a typical ploy that I have observed from the non-rational leftists - “Let’s lump anyone not whining about the same things we are with others who have already made asses of themselve”. Its called marginalizing. Just like now all citizens who vote with any deferrance to their morals must be a religious right drone of the Pat Robertson army. (Funny how no one gave him any credence as a leader of anything until he made an ass of himself - then he was suddenly the spokeperson for all people of faith who disagree with the current Democratic platform)

Anyway, as far as Beck goes, people with “semblance of fairness” are sought out and guests on his show all the time as well as callers with many points of view. He also has the crazies on from both extremes. He also doesn’t insist that life is all about politics and has succeeded in humor where the other pundits fail miserably. I expect to see something from his show that is unlike anything on FOX or anywhere else.

One other point to which you and I aggree - Let the USA be great again. I think if we look at what’s different from our culture now as compared to “The Greatest Generation”, how we recognized and handled enemies rather than trying to make them the victims and we just need to show more understanding, we would see a better way. And I’m not sure we got any influence and prestige by letting other nation’s judgements of us be the guide to what we say and do. But I could be wrong, I won’t pretend to know because it is just not my perspective.

Lastly, I am interested in your challenge to listen to returning members of the military on the level and amount of victories we are acheiving in the Middle East. That’s exactly the sources to which I attribute my “hallow patriotism” and my optimistic outlook. I am former military, tuned into the contrasts and crticism the military officers and soldiers have of the media portrayal of what’s really going on over there. I would love to offer counterpoint for counterpoint with you on the issue, but that’s for a different thread. I’m up against a hard break. :)

Could we see a less venomous response Joe? I think it’s needed and would be appreciated since Whootziedude has offered an olive branch.

Glenn Beck is a non-caring, valueless, immature, joker-like, lame, pathetic individual.
These are serious times, and serious is something Glenn Beck is not. People are calling for his ultimate removal from CNN. lol what a sad individual he is lol.

  13. Dan S. Says:

I totally agree with Joe about Glenn Beck and what CNN is telling us about titself when it hires someone of his silly low caliber.

I wondered where CNN managed to find this smiley-faced blatherer, and found the answer from Jeff Cohen of FAIR:

“Three years ago, our country was driven to war in Iraq by a deceptive White House, abetted by blaring advocates echoing into every American household and car radio – courtesy of a half-dozen media conglomerates.

“And in the middle of that media propaganda onslaught was Glenn Beck. From his talk show distributed by radio giant Clear Channel, Beck sparked ‘pro-America’ rallies across the country, some organized by Clear Channel stations. He wished violent death upon Michael Moore and Congressman Dennis Kucinich, and called Cindy Sheehan a ‘big prostitute.’ All this was known to CNN when it hired Beck.

“Today, the war-hawks are back, as Target Iraq has become Target Iran. And none of them – including Beck – are held to account for having been so deadly wrong when they urged on the last war.”
