Meghan,

Ms. Sheehan has posted her version of the events last night on www.truthout.org. She explains that she was given the invitation yesterday, but she decided she didn't want to go, so she gave it to someone else, but then she later decided that she should go because it had already been announced to the press, etc. I don't know why she didn't think to go home and change beforehand. I suppose she would say that there just was no time. Anyway, you can read what she says, for what it's worth.

I remember when I insulted the "decorum" or my backwoods country high school with some colorful language on a t-shirt. I was asked to turn it inside out. Doesn't cuffing, removal from the premises and "detainment" for up to 4 hours (according to CNN) seem a bit excessive for a t-shirt?

I'm likewise more interested in how/why someone would find wearing a t-shirt to the SOTU to be appropriate, it's not exactly a "business casual" affair.

Actually, I can find no account of what happened last night being called "detainment." Every news story I have read has said she was arrested. Where are you getting that?

Justin, I know that she was cuffed, put in a patrol car and locked in a jail cell for at least a few hours. I don't know if they legally "arrested" her, but it sounds like it was more than just a mere "detainment."

I just heard on FoxRadio that an Ohio Congressman's (Young?) wife was removed last night for wearing a SUPPORT OUR TROOPS tshirt, also. At least the were consistent in enforcing the rules. Wearing a T-Shirt to The State of The Union - what are you thinking?

Was her act really against the law? I don’t really like her too much, but I hope she was not arrested simply because she brought a message of dissent to the State of the Union address.

She wasn't arrested, she was detained. The reason? She couldn't go into the SOTU with any type of protest, be it something she was holding or something she was wearing. Those are just the rules of decorum for this speech, and I believe, when Congress is in session.

I think her shirt displayed the number dead so far in Iraq.

If there really is a law against this, I guess it still bothers me a little because if it were someone else besides Ms. Sheehan, I would probably care a little more.
