Despite the Evidence

… such as “Crash” winning best picture, the Danish cartoon riots, and the Enron shenanigans, the human race continues to evolve.

Researchers from the University of Chicago analyzed the genomes of 209 unrelated individuals from three distinct human populations: East Asians, Europeans and Yorubans from Nigeria. Each population contained roughly 250 positively selected genes; however, most of the affected genes differed depending on the group.

“This study addresses the question ‘Are humans still evolving?’, and the answer is ‘Absolutely,’” study team member Benjamin Voight told LiveScience.

Of course “evolution,” in the biological sense, doesn’t necessarily mean progress or increased complexity. So maybe the evidence fits after all.

Actually it really should be “…such as Crash, Brokeback Mountain, Goodnight and Good Luck, Munich and Syriana being nominated for Best Picture”. Maybe Crash really was the best out of those five. But my pick for best movie of 2005 wasn’t even nominated.

Hmm. So, it we’re unconsciously evolving to better fit new environments which we ourselves have created, is that evidence of Intelligent Design? Or perhaps Subliminal Design? Are we becoming our own improved sheep dog?
