Did You Hear the One About
By Callimachus | Related entries in Bad Decisions, Cartoons, ReligionThe university newspaper in Canada that proudly refused to publish the “inflammatory, offensive and hateful” Jyllands-Posten cartoons, but then a week later proudly published this?
Oh, the things you didn’t know before there were blogs.

Well, things have just calmed down in Nigeria(where 300+ were killed in the riots over the Mohhamed cartoon. I’m thinking that the offended Cristians are grabbing their Passports and packing for a trip to Africa. None of the religious zealots seem to punish the actual offenders.
On a lighter note, sometimes (though rare) I get a warm fuzzy feeling rmemembering that I couldn’t afford college in my younger days. Perhaps some really creative artist could pen some cartoons on Editors and Publishers.

You imply that “inflammatory, offensive and hateful” comes from the newspaper itself, yet you lifted that quote from a letter to the editor.
The paper’s reasoning, while I don’t agree with it, is a bit different.

Phillip: You’re right; I linked to the wrong page on the paper’s site. Thanks for checking that.

Man, what an exercise in mealy mouthed weasel words. This was especially good:
The Sheaf strongly condemns the action taken by the P.E.I. administration and Student’s Union in removing the Cadre from their campus. While we have chosen to focus on other issues that we feel are more important instead of republishing these cartoons, this should not be taken as endorsement of the suppression of discussion or dissent in the rest of the student, alternative, or mainstream press.
In other words, “We will offend anyone we please as long as there is no credible threat that we will face repercussions from it.”
What a bunch of weenies.
