He’s Gay, She’s Straight

Sound like a new sitcom? The Brokeback Bunch? No, it’s the reality for “an estimated 1.7 million to 3.4 million American women who once were or are now married to men who have sex with men,” according to a New York Times article, entombed behind the hated subscription wall.

Noli Irritare Leones, however, has an excerpt, and she follows through to the case studies and sources mentioned in the article, including one from which she quotes:

Spouses in all marriages�gay or straight�choose partners, in part, to meet certain unconscious needs. I tried to explain to Ann that straight individuals rarely marry gay people accidentally. Either they have sexual issues themselves or they need emotional distance from their partners. Ann didn’t want to hear any of this. Instead, she projected all of their problems as a couple onto Eric.
