Why Some Republicans Don’t Like McCain
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Elections, General Politics
Apparently, there are nine:
Personally, it appears for the most part that Republicans don’t like him because he’s not lock step with their ideology. And that’s why I actually like McCain and would consider voting for him. But I suppose that’s probably reason number ten why they wouldn’t want McCain as their nominee.
But for explanations of all these, go to Right Wing News and see if you agree.
By the way, what do you think of McCain?

Republicans have a single ideology? Who knew?

Despite having many good qualities, McCain is a loner who is temperamentally unsuited for the presidency. I really believe this would become apparent in the heat of a national campaign.

Some Republicans Cal. Some Republicans.
I didn’t restate that in the post itself because I thought it could be assumed from the title.

Hrm…
1. His age? Not an issue with me.
2. Very electable, IMO. Of course I was a Paul Tsongas man before I was a Dole man before I was a Lamar Alexander man, so what the hell do I know? =)
3. I’d be very supportive of a “loyal republican” if the republican party wasn’t broken. As it stands, I like the thought of a candidate that gets in the establishment’s craw.
4. This is sadly his largest hurdle in a Republican Primary…those pro-lifers come out in droves for the primaries. Who knows, maybe he’d Bull Moose it.
5. Hopefully the congress would protect us from any Kyoto Clone. Because, you know, congress is known for its backbone.
6. Okay, now you’re hitting close to home. =) But, reality check…would the Donks’ candidate be more tax-cut-friendly? Lesser of two evils here.
7. Right, cuz anybody has the stones to address the issue. Again, most likely, Donks wouldn’t put up anybody tougher on it. Congress, meet backbone. Backbone, congress.
8. Yeah, back to backbone. How ’bout we see some REAL filibustering. You cantankerous old curmudgeons think that SAYING “filibuster” is the same thing? WRONG. Eat yer’ Geritol, put on yer’ Depends, and get down there and read me some phone book, bitches.
9. Yeah, McCain-Feingold is an abomination. The only way that wouldn’t be a net minus for him is if Feingold were the Donk nominee. Hey, it could happen. =P

1. His age? Might be important depending on who his VP pick is…
2. If he could get past the Republican primaries, he would be electable, I just don’t think he would get past the primaries… there are too many Republicans that don’t like him.
3. To me “loyal republican means fiscally conseravative, time to cut the crap out of the budget and bring some sanity back to Washington.
4. Roe v. Wade was a bad decision on the part of SCOTUS, it should be overturned and the people in each area should be able to decide this issue in their own area – just as our government was set up to do!
5. I’m against his “Kyoto Clone” proposition.
6. The tax cuts helped to bring us out of the downward spiral, it created more jobs, more investments, etc. It was very instrumental in bringing the economy out of the dumps, especially after 9/11.
7. I won’t even vote for anyone that doesn’t take our border situation serious! I’m tired of having a subculture of illegals in our country, using up our resources and sticking us with the bill.
8. I didn’t like his Gang of 14 deal, personally I would have loved to see the showdown and put an end to the filibuster for voting for judges anyway. They can keep the filibuster for policy decions or in voting for legislation bills, but for judicial nominations, if they make it out of committee there should be a floor vote.
9. McCain-Feingold – probably the worst legislation to come down the pike and it has his name on it. Talk about pissing off the base, this worthless legislation did it!!!! The very type of speech that the Constitution set out to protect and this clown makes a law limiting it!!!

Check out Project Vote Smart and look at his vote ratings, McCain is really a conservative. As a Democrat I like his small streak of indepedece, but he really is a Conservative Repug. He is a better Repug than Frist or Brownback, but that is like saying – lethal injection vs. hanging is the better form of capital punishment. If Hillary doesn’t stop the Flag burning BS I would vote McCain over Hillary at this time.

I like McCain because I think he’s actually got a shred of decency within him. I like him because he’s not in lockstep with the Republicans. I like him because he seems like he might give fair consideration to ideas that would seem politically untenable to many others. I like him because he’s been in the military, and I always give bonus points for that. I like him because oh, maybe 6 or 7 times out of 10, I agree with him just on the issues, which is a fantastic score for a well-known politician.
I don’t like him because I think he’s opportunistic, and isn’t doing the politician thing out of any kind of sense of altruism. I don’t like him because he really does play the politics game, since I firmly believe that the only really winning move is to refuse to play. (We won’t even go into the sort of problems that opinion causes.)

I think McCain is still a little too conservative for me, but I would have voted for him because he did seem to be a decent man with a lot of integrity, and he does call BS on everyone, even fellow Repubs, if he thinks it’s warranted.
The reason the for the paragraph above being past-tense, as in “I would have voted for him” is due to his tyrade against my boyfriend (pretend) Barack. I know that seems irrational, but when I saw that letter he wrote, it seriously made me reevaluate my previous judgment that he was a completely honorable man. With that letter, I saw a dark side of the man, which now makes me suspicious of him.
I do like that he does not like torture. I don’t either.

Justin, nice article. I recently wrote to Senator McCain telling him why he had no chance of getting elected (as a diehard Republican, I have that responsibility). I had most of your 8 points in my message to him with the exception that:
1. I didn’t really care about that.
4. I didn’t know about this one. Good one!! Thank you.
5. Forgot about the Kyoto Treaty. Figures he’d be for it. That’s exacly what I’m talkin’ about.
8. Wow, yes. The Good Old Gang of 14.
All the rest I had covered, but in all honesty, he just doesn’t get it. Who does he think is going to vote him in, the Democrats?

Right Wing News is full of crap. I, as an independent, disagree with all eight of their “reasons.”
Mccain is an excellent candidate and probably the only Republican that has a chance to defeat the dems this year!
