Chaim Yenkel has no idea what he is talking about, I suggest he read more about the Holy Quran and Iran. He is obviously a bigot and hate-monger. What he is saying is as crazy as someone saying the Holy Bible sanctions rape and the killing of millions og Jews.

Chaim, hopefully our leaders understand that point of Islamist tactics by now. It's spelled out pretty explicitly in all the major Sunni law sects. But I wonder about it's place in Shi'ite practice. I have books at home, but I haven't looked them up yet.

Second, to the larger issue, any serious negotiation between the U.S. and Iran is going on in secret. Anything that gets into the newspapers is either a posture, or the result of a made-in-secret breakthrough, or an attempt to manipulate a third party.

At least I hope so. That's how diplomacy operates, if it works at all. I know we love transparency and despise secrecy in our government, but there are a few places where it's absolutely necessary, and this is one of them. If the Bush White House is so inept or so hamstrung that it can't manage secret talks with other nations, we're really screwed.

There is only one purpose to negotiating with Iran: to find out what they want and politely say no. Iran is officially an Islamic state which means that the Koran is its constitution, its clergy its final guide as its supreme court. A Muslim power is no more permitted to keep negotiated terms with an infidel state than the United States would be able to keep to a treaty unratified by Congress.

The model is Mohammed himself, who negotiated a truce with the Qaresh tribe so that he could build up his military force and destroy them, which he did.

NB: Muslims always use the word “truce and not “peace. Peace is not permitted between Muslims and infidels: infidels must first submit to Islam (the word “Islam means submission). When all are in Dar-al-Islam (the house of Islam) then there will be Dar-al-salaam (the house of peace); until then, those not in Dar-al-Islam are in Dar-al-harb (the house of war).

No clearer expression of imperialism has ever been expressed by any power at any time in world history.

The Iranians appear to be either nervous, fractious, or both. Their purpose in calling for talks is to probably just to discredit President Bush’s causus belli in advance and undermine support for it at home. The Americans will have to work harder now to reestablish that cause. Suddenly the American invasion doesn’t seem so inevitable and that’s cause for concern since Iran’s military ambitions are stark and brutal.
