It Should be Easier to be Self Employed

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in Economy

As a self-employed individual, I loathe tax season. I always owe money. And penalties. And I always pay a higher percentage of my earnings than those who make the exact same amount but work for a traditional employer.

The tax system is not very pro self-employment. But it should be. I look at the problems and suggest some solutions over at Maverick Views.

Having been in biz for 12 years, I have to agree that they don’t make it easy financially. On the other hand, the benefits of cash flow, independence, and self direction make it hard to go back to work on someone else’s clock. If you the size of the small business community, it is puzzling that we don’t have a stronger lobby. Maybe it is our nature …. maybe we are too busy “getting on with it” to put in the energy. We certainly, as a group, contribute a significant chunk to the economy.

Couldn’t agree more. Been procrastinating on my taxes because I know how much of a pain it’s going to be, since I’m not only self-employed but also normally employed at the same time.

My wife is self-employed, and yes it’s an incredible pain at tax time.
