This is one of those posts that are difficult to respond to ... Jimmy has expressed an excellent point .... so does Alan. Bob is vascillating between the two (as am I).

Kreiz hit the nail on the head, I think, because WE (America at large) will view this as a political debate and hammer it to death. Ideally, we could take a Centrist view and argue for the good points from the left and the good points from the right. Realistically, when the rain comes, there is no center view, you either take shelter or get ....... wet?

Cicero set the table well .... choosing something that is palatable will depend on appetite.

My thoughts on Cicero's latest great post are rather lengthy, so I've posted them on my own blog.

It should be noted though, that I'm not a big fan of the thought of adopting isolationism. (I'm a mild Libertarian, what do you expect?) At what point does our right to live without fear become more important than someone else's inalienable right to live at all? Because ultimately, that's what we're talking about. Political or economic upheaval on that scale doesn't just go down with a bloodless bang.

I would be willing to consider Jimmy's thought if I didn't suspect that it's pure fantasy. We're far more likely to see success in simply "focussing their efforts" on killing each other instead of trying to kill us. Perhaps we've been thinking about "hearts and minds" the wrong way. (Please excuse my temporary barbarism here.)

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Here's a question for everyone though, and it's one I've been asking myself for a week or so now. I don't have a good answer because I'm light years away from being anything other than a very interested party.

If Shi’a nuclear proliferation becomes a reality, first, how many nukes are we likely to be talking about? And second, if it's a small number, possibly one, as I assume it would be... would Israel be the first target or would the United States?

There are those who see this issue in the stark and distressing terms laid out here and then there are those who see only or mainly American imperialism disguised as concern over nukes--nukes that, in their argument, Iran has a right to have given Pakistan and North Korea have them. Oh, and Israel too.

These are strange times indeed.

The entire civilization of Japan was completely decimated post WWII, and the medeival Sun-God cult of the Imperial Shinto religion was abolished by the allies. This was the only option available to permanently secure peace in the pacific.

God forbid there is a nuclear terror attack in a western capitol. We may have to start thinking about the religion of 1.3 billion people in the same light of Imperial Japan.

A brilliant piece. In the meantime, we here in the West will largely ignore the problem except to the extent that we castigate Bush for his misdeeds. As Mr. Dylan put it, a hard rain's gonna fall.
