The NeoMugwump Speaks

Hello. I’m the new member of the Donklephant family. The name is Dennis Sanders, and I’m the guy behind a blog called NeoMugwump. I’m one of those rare, and it seems, increasingly endangered species called a moderate Republican. I tend to be a social liberal, which is an anathema in the GOP these days as well as a fiscal conservative, which seems to be an ana….well you get the idea.

For some reason, I still call myself a Republican even though I think the party has abandoned its principles. There are probably a lot of so-called Republicans out there who consider me a “RINO” (Republican in Name Only) because I don’t adhere to their strict definition of being a Republican, which in my view doesn’t resemble the party of Lincoln. Call me stubborn, but I want to be a voice of conscience in the party; which is why I’ve been active in groups like Log Cabin Republicans and Republicans for Environmental Protection. I stay because I want to take back my party and drag it towards the more sensible center. The party as it is today doesn’t seem to respect the values we once treasured: limited government, fiscal responsibility, civil liberties, equality and tolerance. I want to see a party that puts national interest about partisan interest. I’d like to see the Democratic party become more centrist too, but that’s not my battle.

So, here I am. I’m looking forward to chatting with all of you and with my fellow centrists of all political parties. Let’s get to work.

You sound a lot like my husband; he’s the Republican and I’m the Democrat in our family and we both are centrists. I dearly hope there are lot more of us out there. I look forward to your contributions.
