Quote Of The Day
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Immigration, Quotes“We could also electrify this wire with the kind of current that would not kill somebody, but it would simply be a discouragement for them to be fooling around with it. We do that with livestock all the time.”
- Rep. Steve King (R-IA) talking about his border solution.

Assuming that we are talking about the Mexican border, and not the Canadian border, then what Rep. Steve King is proposing is treating Mexican people like animals. Perhaps Rep. King is unaware that electrocuting people would violate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But of course, it wouldn’t be the first time that the U.S. considered itself above international conventions. Or perhaps Rep. King is forgetting the United States’ shameful track record of viewing a race of people as “livestock. Just as a reminder, slavery, the expulsion of Native Americans from their ancestral lands, and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II would qualify as the treatment of people like animals. I’m not saying that I think that illegal immigration is a good thing. I am saying that it is important that keep in mind that we are dealing with fellow human beings, NOT livestock. We should protect our borders but we should also work to protect our democratic ideals, and enforce human and civil rights rather than dispensing with them.
