SPITZER TRIUMPHS IN HIS FIRST DAYS IN OFFICE

I want my readers on ahorre.com to know that Governor Eliot Spitzer’s office acted quickly and in less than one week I received news from the executive office that state money for free GED testing has been found and the “windfall’ has been closed. The granting of GED testing dates, which has slowed down for thousands of individuals across the state, will soon speed up and be back to normal. I applaud the governor’s quick and decisive action and hundreds of thousands of people who have passed the GED and the millions of people who need a GED should do the same. Free GED testing is secure for the future, because millions of dollars will be provided to the GED testing program in Albany.

I want to thank El Diario-La Prensa for publishing an article in 2004 that revealed that New York State was goingto have a problem in free GED testing. All New Yorkers should recognize the importance of this Spanish newspaper in helping everyone all over the state.

I extend special thanks to Hector Gesualdo of Aspira of New York, Consul General Luis Montes-Brito of El Salvador in Miami, Florida, and Reverend Juan Castillo, Secretary of Churches of Assembly of Christ (Asambleas Cristianas) for the faith and trust they have had in me since I first met them. Hector Gesualdo called me into meetings in New York City to provide information to help the Hispanic community and he is my partner in my GED Roundtables. Luis Montes-Brito told me to do whatever I wanted to do to help the Salvadoran community in the consulate in Brentwood, New York, and his quick decision has even led to President Saca of El Salvador speaking about the GED on the Don Francisco Presents and other international Spanish television programs. Reverend Juan Castillo was the first Hispanic to invite me to a meeting and a world convention of ministers.

I THANK ALL THOSE WHO HAVE HELPED ME IN MY FIGHT TO HELP MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ACHIEVE A BETTER LIFE THROUGH EDUCATION AND I CALL ON ALL HISPANICS TO UNITE WITH ME.

I have never talked to Eliot Spitzer before, but I have seen him at events in the last year. I hope that other officials all over the United States will learn from this. We often think that our elected officials do not pay attention to us and we withdraw ourselves from the whole process. It is great to know that we can go to our governor and get help quickly. I ask people everywhere to join with me and my partners in the Hip Hop Summit Youth Council to register to vote and to find out about Hip Hop 4 GED.

NO MENTION OF GED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS?

Below you will find some of the comments made by State Senator David Paterson who is running with Eliot Spitzer during a recent speech. There is not a single mention of the GED and he is addressing the needs of the poor. There are 2.85 million adults in New York without a high school diploma and I am sure many of them are battered women and men. Where is there something specific among the remarks related to GED programs? It is nice to have leadership and it counts for something, but the reality is that there is quota in the number of diplomas earned by people in New York State and without programs that direct battered people directly to get GED help, only the people who have already earned diplomas will be affected. Where is there extra money for GED testing in NY State? Who did the research for him?

We must make it easier for domestic violence survivors to obtain civil legal services by dedicating resources to it, because legal aid is often the only resource available for a survivor. To facilitate this, we will increase funding to groups providing civil legal services to low- and moderate-income domestic violence litigants.

And we will change the statute so that orders of protection will protect children until the age of 18, in order to keep abusive parents safely at a distance.

While domestic violence victims come from every class, race, ethnicity, and religion, poor, young, and uneducated women are far more vulnerable to these crimes.

Women living in households earning less than $10,000 a year are four times more likely than other women to be violently attacked, usually by someone close to them. It is so hard for these women to find the strength to leave these men that nearly 80 percent of adolescent women in abusive relationships continue to date their abusers. Sometimes this has deadly consequences, as 30 percent of all murdered adolescent women are killed by a current or former boyfriend.

The most recent statewide data from 2000 revealed that, excluding New York City, there were 142,932 domestic violence reports made to the Department of Criminal Justice.

As for New York City, in 2005 the NYPD responded to 226,272 domestic violence incidents, which was approximately 620 a day. Together, these figures represent a very rough estimate of 370,000 to 400,000 domestic violence incidents in New York State per year, which is almost certainly underreported.

Helping domestic violence victims start over is the final stage where government can play a role. After the court case and finding a safe place to live, getting an education, learning new professional skills, and finding a job are critical for survivors to start a new life, especially since survivors are disproportionately low-income women with unfinished educations. That is why we are proposing to create the New Path program.

After this training, New Path will encourage and incentivize employers to hire self-identifying domestic violence survivors. Thus, New Path offers a coherent and linear course to domestic violence survivors, to help them graduate from college, get trained for a new profession, and assist them to find good jobs.

We will issue Requests for Proposals for Community Based Organizations that serve immigrant populations and issue grants across the state to assist in this area. These grants will be targeted towards the education, prevention, and elimination of domestic violence in these communities.

I hope you will agree with me that any plan that does not address the needs of poor, undereducated adults is a plan that will have small benefits to those who need help the most. It is like constructing a new house that is being attacked by termites.

Umm.

Sorry about that, but that commercial really has me on the ropes. I’ll promise to vote for him right now if he’ll just promise to stop running the damn thing. Mercy, in the name of God!

Also, he used his underdog position as prosecutor with the full power of the State behind him to “walk into the buzz saw of really powerful interests”. Who could dislike someone like that?

It’s kind of a bummer though, because Pataki had a really good thing going. That man knew how to cut spending. (And piss people off in the process.) I like that in a politician.
