[...] Second, the issue is of trust. You should consider stepping out of your blog-circuit and seeing the wide world of immigrant Muslims bustling everywhere. You’ll find students at Penn Law whose lives are changed by trips to Namibia. Hijabi girls wondering whether they should tell their parents about the guy they are dating. And random software engineers whose wives cook good food. Your friends Anchoress and Maxed Out Mama understand my point clearly (now if only they would stop with the Bush loving). You should then try and meet people like this in real life. As to the remote possibility that among some of these people someone may or may not be somehow or some way connected to a potential terrorist, you should a) lay off watching suspense flicks and b) do the same thing that the rest of us do with a society full of sexual predators, armed roberers, car-jackers, potential rapists, and murderers — keep an eye out, report problems to the authorities, and if nothing seems awry, stop and smell the roses.
Before you get to gushy over his "western" ways ask him a couple of questions"

1. How did he meet his wife? It is probably better than 50/50 that his marriage was arranged and that he his married to a cousin.

2. Ask him how many other relatives he has in the US. It is probable that he has a large number of relatives in the US and will be sponsoring more.

3. Does he have a relative living in his home outside of his nuclear family. After working with a large number of Pakistanis and Indians, I was always amazed that they all had mothers or mother-in-laws living with them. I believe that they control their wives and children by having other relatives in their homes.

I feel the same way about the guy who taught me Arabic in college (he wasn't a professor, technically). He was from Baghdad, and his feelings on the Iraq war altered mine fairly significantly. I couldn't ignore the fact that he voted for Bush and viewed the war quite favorably even if I still thought it was a mistake. Plus he made all the Arabic students make Middle Eastern dishes of various sorts and bring them to class once a year. Very tasty.

That said, turkish coffee is like trying to drink concentrated sludge. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can successfully down a cup of that stuff, much less enjoy it.

<blockquote>"I asked him if he was Muslim. "Yes" he said, “but <b>really it doesn’t mean much</b>. I eat pork and drink beer. I never go to the mosque. </blockquote>
If this is what it takes to be a peaceful Muslim, then I fear we are all screwed.
