Lieberman In Trouble? Hmm…
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Elections
Looks like the Republican dark horse, Alan Schlesinger, came out strong in the recent debate. Or at least that’s what the left would have you believe.
Hot Air has an interesting roundup of the blogosphere’s attempt to paint Schlesinger as the winner.
And then, more from the Hartford Courant…
The televised hourlong encounter also included Republican Alan Schlesinger, who saved his sharpest attacks for Lieberman. The two are vying for Republican votes.Schlesinger, recalling Lieberman’s public scolding of former President Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal, sniped at the senator for being AWOL in Washington as North Korea pursued its nuclear ambitions.
“The question should be why has Joe Lieberman over the last 18 years not been there on this issue,” Schlesinger said. “Joe, you had more moral outrage about Mr. Clinton’s indiscretions than about North Korea’s nuclear proliferation.”
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the Republican-led Congress take their eye off nuclear North Korea in favor of trying to impeach Clinton?
In any event, if Schlesinger can siphon even 10%, Joe may once again be Loserman and the blogsophere will claim credit for Lamont’s win…by supporting Schlesinger.
What times we live in…

You are the first person I have read who intimates that Schlesinger did not come out strong in the debate. Do you meant to say that or am I reading you incorrectly?

You are correct that the Republican-led Congress took their eye off North Korea in favor of trying to impeach Clinton, however Joe Lieberman was with them on that. He was the cheif Democratic critic of Clinton during Monicagate, and spent countless hours talking about it, with comparitively no time spent talking about North Korea; that is why Schlesinger’s criticism holds up.
That Schlesinger did well in the debate is hardly limited to what the left wants you to believe, as the Hartford Courant has been criticized in this race for being pro-Lieberman if anything. Also to say only the left saw a strong performance is totally misrepresenting Schlesinger’s success, which was only with conservative voters; he was too sloppy about mentioning race and too overdramatic in some of his responses to appeal to moderates.
Lamont was the one who won the debate among moderates, but it was just as much due to looking statesmanlike by having Schlesinger take over the role of attack dog as it was due to Lieberman’s condescention and sense of entitlement.
