Putting The Future Of Oil In Perspective
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Money, Science
Given what I know about the Fischer-Tropsch method of extracting crude from coal, I think the following opinion that we’ll never really run out of oil pretty credible.
A University of Washington economic geologist says there is lots of crude oil left for human use.Eric Cheney said Friday in a news release that changing economics, technological advances and efforts such as recycling and substitution make the world’s mineral resources virtually infinite. [...]
“The most common question I get is, ‘When are we going to run out of oil?’ The correct response is, ‘Never,’” said Cheney. “It might be a heck of a lot more expensive than it is now, but there will always be some oil available at a price, perhaps $10 to $100 a gallon.”
Will $100 oil hurt? You bet. But hopefully by the time crude reaches that level we’ll have enough alternative energy solutions to offset the costs. And I’ll continue to state that one of the most important fronts of the WoT is significant investments in alternative fuels. We can fight all the pre-emptive wars we want, but until we make our dependence on crude a thing of the past, Islamic extremists will always have enough money to terrorize us.
Food for thought.

Until and unless we get politicians’ (primarily Republicans) hands out of Big Oil’s pockets the chances of any significant level of investment in alternative fuels is nearly zero.
Another significant point you seem to ignore is that whether or not sufficient oil is present for the next 200 years, can we survive what burning all of it will do to our atmosphere?
