BenG

W could come out and say "I drink puppy smoothies with Glen Reynolds every Saturday night", and evangelicals wouldn't leave the party.
Because they KNOW where the democrats stand in relation to evangelical values. They also know that there are plenty of Repulicans who don't share those values, but the party overall does. As far as they are concerned, they have nowhere to go. But they know they have a responability to vote.

BTW: I am not the church-goer in the house. She's an evangelical, and I'm an athiest. She doesn't know it, though, so don't tell her ;)

Mr. DiRito, thanks for a great post. The responses are equally as eye opening: Says Mr. Church-goer "...my wife is an evangelical & a republican. Nobody at her church is talking about turning democrat. Foley is just viewed as a bad apple." Wow, that says it in a nut shell, I emphasize the word NUT ! This is exactly what you're reffering to... concern about political strategy and psychology of voters while our democracy is dying a painful death. It's not the shame that Foley has put upon those Honorable Walls on top of the Hill that matters to each of us as citizens of this country we hold so high and mighty, it's how we so easily shrug off what we profess is so important - our morality - just to keep our good 'ole boys on top. You get what you pay for, I suppose.

Do you really think repbulicans are jumping ship over Foley? I think the press and the Dems just want people to think that. My wife is an
evangelical, and a republican. Nobody at her (large) church is talking about turning democrat. Foley is just viewed as a bad apple.

The current theme that Democrats want to "surrender to the terrorists" or "wave the white flag of surrender to the terrorists", as promoted yesterday by Bush himself in his Stephanopolous interview and Bill Frist on CNN, should go a long way toward bringing the country together to solve the problems in Iraq, right?

The problem with offensive rhetoric like that is that while it may fire up the base it also fires up the other side. When you frame the argument in those terms, you can expect the other side to be spitting nails before long.
