Mr. Gardner; Hope you’re havin a fine day, as am I. Some pre-election thoughts–call it ‘reflections on elections’ [sorry, now I've gotta try n rhyme the whole thing--not] I saw Meet the Press ystrday & was left with one overwhelming thought; we must somehow get term limits in place, because rght now it’s all about re-election. Not so much about governing or legislating, just politicing.
This season, more than ever before, we’ve witnessed the Repubs change their stance & message simply for the purpose of reelection, and it’s been so transparent. Ex: all those adds from N. Eastern Repub encumbents that sound exactly like Dems would’ve sounded a couple of months ago; change course in Iraq, replace Rhumsfeld, have oversight to spending on war, bla, bla, bla. So disingenuous, I can’t imagine how anyone can fall for it. Now you all care so much about these things ? Wonder why it wasn’t so important when you could’ve done smthng about it !
What does this say about our current state of government ? To me the party in power has had such a grip on things, they influenced, bullied, steam-rolled over so many aspects of our government for the past few years–it’s scary… and the opposition has caved in too easily, afraid to be called anti-American, terrorist sympathizers…PLEASE.
So, my conundrum is, regarding my original point about term limits; is John McCain the best choice now for 2008? He’s also talked about voter subsidized campaign funding as the only source of campaign spending. Isn’t he the one we’ve mostly heard talk about these things ?
