Thanks folks. It was exciting and invaluable to have this site to help filter the noise. Although fustrating at times, I was also pleased wth the Networks–CNN mostly, not to rush to predict outcomes–good job there as well. Guess things look better when you win !
But who did win- liberals ? moderates ? Sounds like, in many cases, conservative Democrats. What the heck is that animal–a mule with a long nose ?
Well, get some sleep all of you and when you wake up you’ll have one of those surreal moments–no, it wasn’t a dream, you actually made a difference ! Now what about 2008; is McCain the one ?

Yes, excellent job! Of course, the really hard part is still to come, which is figuring out what this Dem “tsunami” (as Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann frequently called it on MSNBC last night) really means for the next two years.
For now, I’ll just say that the Dems didn’t deserve to win Congress, but the GOP sure as heck did deserve to lose it, and they did.
BTW in Wisconsin, the state where I’ll be living/working for the next year and possibly beyond, there was a strangely mixed result. U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl and Gov. Jim Doyle (both Dems) won re-election, but two referenda on state constitutional amendments, one defining marriage as between one man and one woman and another to re-introduce the death penalty, both passed (although the death-penalty referendum is non-binding).

McCain could be, and given this swing…it may be certain that he’s the heir apparent to the nomination. Why? Well, as Dems move closer to the center…so too will McCain. He knew he had to oppose gay marriage to get the Evangelicals on his side, but that amendment didn’t pass in Arizona. He’ll point to this as yet another sign of his “maverick” status.
However, what may hamstring McCain is having to appeal to that base. Independents won’t be too keen on Repubs for a while now, and any Repub running for the White House will have to find out that they have a new base…squarely in the middle.
In any event…we shall see…
