Blue sky thoughts
By Sean Aqui | Related entries in Discuss, Economy, Elections, Ideas, Immigration, Money, NewsI’ve come up with a couple of out-there ideas — one on the minimum wage, the other on campaign contributions. I don’t pretend they’re realistic; mostly, they’re thought exercises. But I can’t really tell.
I’d appreciate people’s thoughts, but I find I’m actually too embarassed to post them here. So they’re up over at Midtopia.
Be gentle….

I think the minimum wage idea may have merit.
On the other hand, I actively don’t likt the campaign contributions idea.
My reasoning is that hiding the donor identity only obfuscates the information for the public. The politician only needs a quick phone call from a donor saying, “You’ll get $100,000 in your account within 15 minutes, remember me.” Plan destroyed.
Politics in the light of day is the only safe course. As I am now saying Dem/Repub relations, “Cooperate but verify.”

That’s why I’d have the central clearinghouse aggregate donations and deliver them in a single check mailed monthly or quarterly. Unless an individual donation is so huge that it swamps the rest, there’s no way the politican can tell if the donor is telling the truth or not.
