		<description>He never really was liberal towards social issues; he just said what he needed to say to run for governor against Ted Kennedy in Massachusetts some years back.  His recent opponent was weak anyway so he could beat her regardless of social issues.  

Romney, you could say, is the true political opportunist.  Sort of like Kerry and Edwards being for the war when it was popular and against it when it became otherwise.  My guess is that they were always anti-war but didn&#039;t want to look weak.

BTW, is &quot;Mitt&quot; his full name that appears on his birth certificate?  What kind of a name is Mitt anyway?</description>

This is likely because Romney is a Mormon, and the mainstream religious right has historically been ambivalent toward the Mormon church and its teachings (hence the slur &quot;counterfeit Christianity&quot; often used agianst them).</description>
