Most of the people responsible for giving us President Bush don't realize that a significant portion of the country never really supported many of the most conservative positions they took. Since they don't realize that they think that choosing someone who is even more purely conservative is what they need to succeed. Instead, if they succeed in pushing a candidate like that through the nomination process it almost won't matter who the Democratic candidate is so long as they are not an extremist.

Yes, the GOP primary will be messy. But this is the natural result of a situation where there is no incumbent or other clearly dominating candidate. Aside from a general dislike of flip-flops (I was for the war before I was against the war?), Republicans of a certain stripe prefer that their candidates not only say the right things, but have demonstrated them over time, whether through political action or their personal life.

Not only will the Dems have the same problem, they already do. The well funded collision between HRC, Obama, and Edwards is going to be one nasty explosion after another. I'm just thankful that, on the Democratic side, we'll have Sharpton in the mix to keep things entertaining. I hope they include him in the debates this time.
