"I remember having that same feeling when I was in grade school, when preachers would speak at mandatory assemblies. "

I attended the public school system in S. FL during the 50-60's and we never had preachers of any denominaton speaking at public assemblies, mandatory or otherwise.

Environmentalism is the closest thing secularists have to religion and it springs from the same impetus. The need for Certainty and objective truth. Secularists use the 'certainty' of environmentalism as a substitute for faith in the divine.

Bob,

Hey, I'm all for teaching respect for the Earth. I'm very much a conservationist. But, come on, it's just a wee bit weird to place a globe at the center of a circle, have everyone reach their hands out towards it and recite a verse that, if you changed "Mother Earth" to "Our Lord" would be a prayer.

"OK. they didn't worship it. . . . I was left with the feeling of having prayed to someone else's God."

Well, Alan, all of us have had that same feeling. I remember having that same feeling when I was in grade school, when preachers would speak at mandatory assemblies. Thank God those days are over. Trying to instill respect for the environment can hardly be called a religion, any more than instilling a value about democracy.
