Ann Coulter Calls Edwards A Faggot. She Is Done.

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Media, Partisan Hacks

I promised I wouldn’t post about Ann Coulter on this blog again. Well, I apologize to those I’ve lied to, but it’s happening. One more post about her and then she’s done. And I’m sure you hope so too…

By now you’ve heard that Coulter said in her CPAC speech that John Edwards was a faggot. It’s not only a reprehensible comment, but also a puzzling one. Why attack Edwards? Because of his finely coiffed hair? His slick rhetoric? Because he’s frontrunn…oh, that’s right…you’re a hack Coulter.

Honestly, I think we’ll ultimately have to thank Ann because we’ll see this as a turning point. She made a completely indefensible comment at CPAC, and the conservative faithful have to condemn her. Yes, the Republican nominees will ultimately have to poo-poo her comments. This is all speculation, but I can’t imagine that they won’t, given the political uproar that’s grown out of this.

Rest in peace Ann. We so very knew ye schtick. And, of course, you’ll always have a place on Hannity and Colmes.

Again, Alan Colmes…please leave before it’s too late. You have been warned.

UPDATE:
I believe Captain’s Quarters was the first one to write about this, and Ed had this to say

At some point, Republicans will need to get over their issues with homosexuality. Regardless of whether one believes it to be a choice or a hardwired response, it has little impact on anyone but the gay or lesbian person. We can argue that homosexuality doesn’t require legal protection, but not when we have our front-line activists referring to them as “faggots” or worse. That indicates a disturbing level of animosity rather than a true desire to allow people the same rights and protections regardless of their lifestyles.

Well said.

I do have to point out that the right blogosphere has responded to this bit of nastiness in a very encouragain, unified manner. Good. But I’m still gonna wait for conservative commentators who are actually friends with Coulter, like Limbaugh and Hannity, before I give any pats on the back.

Also, will Fox News axe Coulter from their wildly funny new show The 1/2 News Hour?

And will she be taken off all the cable news channels’ pundit rosters? Seems fairly appropriate, no?Inquiring minds…

RedState says this

Indeed, all of the Republican presidential candidates - and especially those in attendance at CPAC - should denounce Coulter. She should never again be invited to CPAC. She should, for that matter, never again be invited to another conservative or Republican event. She should be totally and utterly shunned by the conservative movement. We don’t need her; if anything, she has become a hindrance and an eyesore, a figure who liberals can point to and say: “Look. That’s why you don’t want to vote Republican.” She can’t possibly be drawing anyone into the conservative movement. If anything, she’s got to be decreasing our numbers.

Now this is interesting because it brings up a point. She has been around for a while, and she has been spreaing her venom far and wide. It’s curious that at this point, and with this comment, conservatives are now really saying, “Uh…we don’t like her either.” Of course they did, and many probably still do. I think it speaks to how far off track the conservative movement has gotten, when you’ve got your two leading comic voices being Coulter and Limbaugh. I’ve heard it time and time again, “Oh, they’re just provocateurs!” And yes, they are…racist, bigoted provocateurs.

So why give them cover for so long? Because honestly folks, if the conservative movement wants to grow, they will also have to shed this image of being racist, homophobic and bigoted. And most likely, they’re going to have to modify their views on the politics that go along with that.

Can they do it? Let’s hope.

UPDATE:
So here’s the video…

Wow, people did actually laugh and clap. Ouch.

CPAC, you’ve got a long way to go…

TITLE UPDATE:
A few commenters mentioned that the previous title of this post, ‘Ann “Edwards is a Faggot” Coulter in Done’ was misleading. After considering it, I’ve changed it since Coulter didn’t actually say “Edwards is a Faggot.” Here’s what she actually said, “I was going to say something about John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot.’”

Fair’s fair, so Coulter can now be fairly judged by everybody reading this on what she actually said instead of what my paraphrase suggested.

Vice President Cheney also attended the CPAC conference. Given the fact that Cheney has a gay daughter, I wonder what the reaction would have been if Coulter had suggested Hillary was a “Dike”? Shouldn’t Cheney openly rebuke Coulter and all gay bashers? Where does the hypocrisy end?

  2. funny Says:

Funny how you have to put something in quotes that she didn’t really say in order to malign her… it almost makes it seem as if she said it…

  3. Dave Says:

intent funny says, intent. What do you think she said when the words spewed from her trash mouth?

  4. Christa Says:

She is obviously a very troubled person. The whole way she ducked around the comment just to actually make the comment, just backs up the fact that she has very little to rely on between her two ears.

If you want to try and cut someone down, why in the world would you regress to playground trash talking?

If you believe in reincarnation…. this woman is sooooooo screwed!

  5. ItAintEazy Says:

If a conservative says “faggot” in the MSM woods, does it make a sound?

  6. dj Says:

What are you talking about, funny? It’s very clear what she said. Have you watched the video?

Please let this be her macaca moment so she can languish in obscurity. I can’t believe anyone still pays any attention to her.

  7. Joshua Says:

Unfortunately Ann Coulter may not be as done as we think. One of the Volokh Conspiracy bloggers noted that Coulter’s rhetoric should have done her in years ago, but she has still survived.

As I noted in the comments there, this is probably due to two things: (1) Coulter being a woman (male political figures who appeal to bigotry throughout American history are a dime a dozen; female ones, not so much) and (2) the PC Left’s defining bigotry so far downward that it labels most Americans as bigots, thus triggering the “boy who cried wolf” effect when a genuine one like Coulter comes along.

  8. Fred Says:

Ann Coulter can scratch her ankles without bending over.

    Ann Coulter for PRESIDENT !
    Give them hell Ann…………………….

  10. Monica Says:

I hope you’re right - I’d love it if we never heard from her again. Coulter is repulsive and reflects poorly on the conservatives. I was really impressed by Captains Quarters response. He gives me hope for the conservative party.

  11. Justin Gardner Says:

Indeed Monica. Ed Morrissey and I may not agree on a great many issues, but he has integrity and I can’t remember a time when I’ve read his blog and he’s made specious or intellectually dishonest arguments. He gives me hope too.

  12. DosPeros Says:

She’s the Ward Churchill of the “conservative movement.” At least, the Republicans have their embarrassment isolated to two or three national figures rather than the diaspora of idiocy on the Left that clings to university campus’ like a viral infection. She is easily dealt with, marginalized and, in fact, can be used when needed. The Left could only wish to have this problem.

That being said, other than how it relates to federalism, homosexual rights is not a conservative issue. As an issue, Republicans would be well advised to keep it in the closet and continue to ensure SCOTUS Justices that aren’t on the wing-bat fringe.

  13. Brendan Steinhauser Says:

I posted the following comments at http://www.theconservativerevolution.com

Ann Coulter should not speak at CPAC

After last year’s remarks, calling Muslims “ragheads and this year’s remark, calling John Edwards a “faggot at CPAC, Ann Coulter has solidified her reputation as a bigoted, loud-mouthed shock pundit whom true conservatives should ostracize.

As I watched her on C-SPAN today I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. On national television Coulter went out of her way to use a word that has no use, other than to hurt, offend and degrade. It wasn’t funny, and it wasn’t cute. It was stupid. The sad part is that some self-professed conservatives clapped and laughed and cheered for her. Shame on them.

CPAC should not invite Coulter back to speak, and organizations should not promote her as a writer nor as a speaker. I used to recommend her to students as a resource, but I will no longer do so.

Segregation is so fifties… or so I thought

Even more disturbing were conversations I had at a bar in Adams Morgan later on. There were a handful of kids wearing George Wallace buttons who were extolling the virtues of segregation and saying blacks and Hispanics had lower intelligence quotients. Their racism clearly influenced their views on illegal immigration policy. By the way, these guys were the loudest supporters of Tom Tancredo for president.

How, in 2007, anyone could hold such views and proudly display the image of a man (George Wallace) who represents hatred, discrimination and white supremacy is beyond me.

I certainly do not want to be associated with such ideas. Their thinking is tribalist, collectivist and deterministic. It stems from the identity politics and conflict theory that Marx devised and his intellectual descendants promote. How anyone who holds such anti-freedom and anti-individualist ideas can call themselves conservatives is perplexing. The whole reason conservatives should oppose affirmative action and multiculturalism is because we base our judgments of people on their individual merits, and not on their artificial “ethnic group.

This was the first CPAC I attended and it very well could be the last if Ms. Coulter, Mr. Tancredo and their minions continue to hold center stage.

  14. DosPeros Says:

Wait a second, I just watched the video. That was also a commentary on the political correctness, as well as, a stab at Edwards. Inappropriate, yes. But lets get to the real issue…

The guy that cuts my hair — (My favorite Republican fa…homosexual” routinely refers to other homosexuals as “faggots”, “queens”, “bitches”…exc. Very crude — but is he a biggot? Is this like the “N-word”? Can only homosexuals call each other faggot? Man, I get so confused on the words that Justin will allow me say or not say without being a bad guy.

  15. Justin Gardner Says:

Ward Churchill. Ha! I love when conservatives pull old Ward out of the closet. Yep, the left really embraces old Ward. He’s on t-shirts and talk shows and he writes best-selling books that are bought in bulk by conservative think tanks. Apt comparison Dos, as usual.

Conservatives have an image problem, and Coulter is its manifestation. Hopefully they will marginalize her after this, but that laughter and clapping certainly didn’t seem like marginalization to me. I bet you anything that Coulter will be on Hannity and Limbaugh’s show soon saying, “Obviously it was a reference to Isiah Washington from Grey’s Anatomy. Come on people! It was a joke.” And then this will all be swept under the rug and she’ll be invited to conservative functions again and again and again. And I do hope I’m wrong, but she’s done this type of stuff before and she still gets invited back to CPAC and is introduced by MITT ROMNEY! It’s not like Tancredo introduced her…one of the leading conservative hopefuls for President intro’d her. If that doesn’t speak to her stature in conservative circles, I don’t know what does.

  16. Justin Gardner Says:

Concerning the whole n-word argument, seriously Dos?

I’ll let Ed Morrissey answer this one

A few commenters compared “faggot” to the N-word, saying that gays use it as a term of endearment and then get hypocritically offended when straights use it to describe them. I’m not familiar with that level of usage, but let’s say it’s true. If Ann Coulter got up and desceribed Barack Obama as a “n—-r” as part of a joke at an event like CPAC, would you think that reflected well on conservatives? Uh, no.

Use the words if you want. But it’s at the risk of your credibility, not mine.

  17. What Says:

I agree with the 2nd comment - why don’t you change or comment on your ‘quotes’ above - something Coulter DID NOT SAY. You malign her with your lie.

  18. Bill P Says:

If the Dems continue to spend so much time focusing on what the talking heads say instead of focusing on the actual candidates…they’re as done as they have been for the past 2 elections.

[...] Politics & Religion Ann Coulter, who knew she could dive any farther into the deep end? This is all I’ll say about Coulter, and I’m glad to see she’s finally getting the fragging she deserves. See more here. There’s more to come in the world of politics, but I plan on some real posts dealing with this weeks events after my weekend work stint. Expect the in-depth analysis you’re probably expecting by Monday night. [...]

  20. DosPeros Says:

Look, Mrs. DosPeros is a confirmed life-long “fag-hag”. She loves em’ and so do I. The fags I know are for the most part intelligent, sophisticated, fantastically-talented individuals. I work with two fags and they are infinitely more competent than their heterosexual peers. Furthermore, I am a patron, sit on the board and routinely contribute significant amounts of money to one of our little community dinner theatre — which means I financially support dozens of openly fag individuals. In addition, I live in a house with three women. I am so close to being a fag myself that it is almost scary. You could only dream of having my fag-credentials, buddy. To counter this situation, I buy firearms, watch NASCAR once a week and drink a lot of domestic beer.

You, though, Justin, CONFIRM part of Coultiers point with your hyper-sensitive grand-standing. Trust me, the fags don’t need you to come to their rescue. They’ve go it covered.

  21. JayHawk Phrenzie Says:

John Edwards should send Ann a nice Thank You card. This gives him a chance to play the victim card. His entire career is built out of creating false victims, so it is only natural that he plays the victim card.

An intelligent person might realize that Ann did NOT call John Edwards a “faggot”, in fact, she quite specifically said that she would not be calling him one.

What Ann did was make a satirical, sharply barbed attack on Political Correctness using John Edwards as a foil. The reaction to her remark, just as in the case of the infamous “Jersey Girls” remarks, proves how absolutely correct her point was.

I am sick of weak-kneed, so called conservatives that lack the brains to understand Ann and the balls to back her up.

Ann is intelligent, passionate and unafraid and that’s why I admire her.

  22. Charlie Parisek Says:

Ann Coulter is a man trapped in a woman’s body.

  24. Justin Gardner Says:

I’ve deleted a couple incendiary, vile comments about gays and also about Coulter in the past couple hours. Neither will be tolerated here, so if you’re gonna post them, I’m just gonna delete them anyway.

To anybody else who’s trying to be provocative and/or explain away Coulter’s remarks, that’s your right. Again, it hurts your credibility here, not mine.

  25. bob in fl Says:

For those of you who insist Ann Coulter did not call John Edwards a faggot, you need to take several classes in remedial English. Instead of using 4 words, she took a couple dozen or so to do it.

Another translation would be, “I would call Edwards a faggot, but if I did, I would have to go to a rehab.”

Of course, all you Coulter groupies have to twist the facts to fit your own idol worship of her.

  26. TuscanWolf 777 Says:

Coulter will always be around in one way or another because hate sells. Always has, always will and there are enough morons out there who will always believe Coulter is genuine. However, the real scum merchant here is the company responsible for keeping her in the public eye: Fox News.
