New Bipartisan Campaign Finance Bill?
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Elections, MoneyTwo senior senators are pressing ahead with a new plan to allow congressional candidates to forgo private contributions as well.Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.), yesterday introduced a bill to allocate public money to candidates based on the population of their states, the price of TV ad time in their local media markets and their ability to meet minimum fundraising requirements.
The bill aims to “eliminate the very heavy drain on the time of elected officials as we prepare for reelection campaigns, Specter said, questioning the position that a judicial precedent exists for prohibiting campaign-finance limits.
Think it could work?
And while they’re at it, can we get election day either pushed to the weekend or declared a National Holiday so the voter turnout will go dramatically up? Please!

What isn’t taken into consideration are donations to outside special interest groups, which are far more prevalent than the direst donations to the candidates. Until this is addressed, there will be no such thing as meaningful campaign finance legislation. What will work is a truly committed & knowledgeable electorate. “Dream, the impossible dream . . .”

Moving the election date to a weekend or making it a holiday would result in a lower turnout at the polls because people would be inclined to take the day off to do something other than vote. I take voting very seriously and even I would be inclined to do something other than vote if it was a holiday.
