My question is, if we get out of Iraq, will the Iraqis take care of the al Qaeda threat themselves? This seems to point in that direction. They know the language and they can fight with the kinds of tactics we can’t. After all, it is there country.
Here’s more from the AP…

The joint chiefs, General Petraeus, The Iraqi military, and the Maliki government say not yet. John Murtha says right now. Harry Reid says who cares.

The Anbar Salvation Council has done well against AQ, they are organized as light infantry brigades of about 500 to 600 men. They know their area intimately and can find foreigners better than we can. I don‘t know if the guy is really dead but ASC is at least reducing the freedom of operation he had in the past. The operation has been successful enough that similar groups are being raised in other parts of the country, but notably not in the major cities where undesirables might join. My concern is that these paramilitary units might take on a life of their own after the AQ threat is taken care of, evolving from anti terrorist groups to political intimidation and yet another sectarian private army.
