What’s this?

On first glance it’s just a weird number. But it’s actually an encryption key that unlocks the new HD-DVD format. That means pirates can get to the content and offer it on the web for free.

It’s also a number that took down one of the most popular social news site yesterday.

To the commenter above (nice job leaving your name): grow up. What’s the last thing you produced that was worth copyrighting?

  3. James Says:

Honestly… I’m on Digg’s side with this one.

All of the people who are overreacting and acting like this is some sort of censorship need to take a pill and a time out.

HD-DVD is encrypted for a reason… posting the code to bust the encryption is a violation of the copyrights owned by the creators of the HD-DVD format and that is illegal.

Digg had a legal obligation to remove the information.

  4. Fred Bloggs Says:

I remember, a few years back, seeing Lars Ulrich on the news complaining about music downloads. ” I’m a proffessional musician man…I should be paid for my work..etc etc.”. Fair enough, I thought. He has a point. Then my eyes were drawn to the gold rings on his fingers. Rings which, I estimated, were probably worth more than my house. Then my attitude changed…he’s got enough and I payed for it (I owned all the Metalica albums up to that point). I’ve never bought another album from them since, nor will I ever. As long as they (the recording/movie industry) continue to rip us off in order for them to stay on the gravy train..we’ll rip them off. Tiz only fair. The RIAA sucks, DRM sucks and 09-f9-11-02-9d-74-e3-5b-d8-41-56-c5-63-56-88-c0 should be posted anywhere online you see a box that lets you leave a comment.

So because someone is wealthy we should be justified in theft?

  6. James Says:

Theft is theft…. Adobe makes millions upon millions on their products and Shareware developers make very little on average from their efforts.

Should we then say, that it is OK to steal a copy of Photoshop because Adobe won’t miss the money yet we should support the shareware dev because he has to eat this week?

Thank you everyone involved in exposing the HD-DVD code breaker, brilliant news. Now, as I’m new to this game, (computers) i’d like to know how I use this info? Do I go out and borrow a dvd, try to copy it on my pc to use on my own cheap and nasty dvd player? Will that work?????

Depends how you define theft I guess. The existance of God being unproven…all morality is arbitrary.

If I choose to think that Britney wearing a dress that cost more than I earn in a year is criminal that’s my view and I’m entitled to it.

If you choose to think that the massive price difference between a blank dvd and one with a film on it is fair then that’s your view…and you’re welcome to it my friend.

  15. DosPeros Says:

Nice Justin. Smart thinking. Attracting the highest caliber - can you say contributory infringement, nice. So I guess I’m within my rights to start Donklephant, the porn site.

  16. Justin Gardner Says:

Dos, you checked for this key on Google lately?

And how the hell do you think this is related to stealing my name and using it for your benefit? This is a post, not a blog based around the key.

  17. Kevin Says:

I’m not a fan of mainstreaming software piracy. Like it or not, if media companies cant make a profit investing in a movie, they wont make the movie. If cracking DVD keys becomes commonplace, media companies will resort to other tactics to protect their intellectual property. The rest of us comsumers might not like those other tactics. On the plus side, I’m totally stoked for Donklephant porn.

ps. I’m not the Kevin who posted above. I hate it when my name gets used by stupid people.

  18. Ryan Says:

    Okay, who hacked the site?

  19. Ryan Says:

Umm. Wow. Any word from the tech dept?

  20. ChrisO Says:

Fred Bloggs said “all morality is arbitrary.” Bullshit. I’m sure you believe that until someone relies decides that their arbitrary definition of morality allows them to beat the shit out of you and take everything you own. Either put together a coherent argument or just admit you’re a selfish prick.

The reason rock bands, movie stars and athletes make so much money is because they can do something very few people in the world can do. But why bother trying to excel at something? Just convince yourself you’re entitled to what they have and take it. Life sure is easy when you have the benefit of arbitrary morality.

  21. DosPeros Says:

JG, relax. But lets face it, you are willfully contributing to copyright infringement by publishing the code. Exhibit A:

Hi, I am new to this, so bear with me. How do I input the code?
    Thank you.

The thing about a mob is that it never turns out very good for a certain percentage of the mob.

  22. rachel Says:

So because someone is wealthy we should be justified in theft?

Theft? What theft? I just want to watch the DVDs I bought on my own equipment, which I also bought. What I want to do is fair use, and is neither illegal not immoral. Oh, and by the way: the real pirates cracked the HD-DVD encryption like five minutes after the first one was sold. The only thing this encryption does is inconvenience people who buy legal copies. That’s a really smart business model: assume your customers are potential thieves and treat them accordingly–while you suck all the money out of them you can. I see this working for many more years to come… NOT!

  23. Fred Bloggs Says:

Quote:”Fred Bloggs said “all morality is arbitrary.â€Â? Bullshit. I’m sure you believe that until someone relies decides that their arbitrary definition of morality allows them to beat the shit out of you and take everything you own.”

So, in your morality, It’s ok to try and convince someone of your argument by obliquely suggesting that there may be a threat to their life and chatels?
In a lions world it’s fine to murder and devour a gazelle..is it ok?…of course it is. Is it ‘morally’ ‘right’?…depends on whether your a lion or a gazelle I suppose. Morallity is a very personal thing. Your morality probably isn’t perfectly aligned with the laws of your government…neither is mine.
All this posturing about whether or not it’s ok to steal copywrite material is piffle. Do we want to backup what we’ve bought?..sure…but more importantly (If we’re honest) we want to get or media content as cheaply as possible…the ultimate goal being for FREE. I’m not ‘really’ suggesting that musicians should bankrupt themselves in order to make music. I’m merely saying that there is a balance point…and at the moment it’s we the consumers who are getting the smelly end of the deal.
