    Where are the Democrats now? They sure made a lot of hay over gas prices prior to the election, didn’t they?

    Does that mean that I think oil prices are not artificially high? Not really. I will certainly concede that various factors will push oil up and down.

    Yes, we have refinery issues (fire, fuel mix changeover), but there is no “real” oil shortage. There is an easing of tension after the Iraq/Great Britian crisis. Speculators are pushing oil prices higher than they need to be.

    Still, oil is trading at $10 less per barrel than they were a year ago and yet the price of a gallon of gas is about the same.

    What we are seeing now is big oil grabbing at an issue and pushing prices up artificially high because after such huge profits last year, the demand from stockholders to maintain high dividends/prices.

    Just barely: it was news earlier this week when $4/gallon turned up in one (and only one) station in the San Francisco area. But note: that’s $4/gallon for 87 octane regular, pump it yourself. Not higher octane or actual service stations (are there places which pump the gas for you any more?), which have hit $4/gallon long since.

    I believe what really happened is that the oil companies (or at least their investors) liked the windfall profits from the price hikes last year so much that they decided to artificially recreate them this year. “Unexpected” refinery problems…yeah, right. Just like Gonzales really doesn’t remember that he fired those attorneys because they weren’t anti-Democrat enough.

    Prices in Auckland for 91 octane - NZD1.559 per litre.

    Equates to USD8.035 per US gallon.

    You are getting just what Bush ordered - cheap fuel.

    The price signs at the QT I like to fill up at were being increased as I drove out tonight. I don’t buy the oil company arguments because they were exposed in an article the summer before last in the Kansas City Star as having been shutting down refineries during the ’90s on purpose because of too much capacity to make them happy with their profit margins. There was a refinery in a small town in Kansas that was shut down in spite of the town’s citizens finding a buyer for it because their town needed the jobs. Now the oil companies blame refinery shortages on NIMBYism. Does anyone really believe they looked that hard for locations for new refineries? I don’t.

    WHERE ARE ALL THE TREE HUGGERS TO CELEBRATE!!!???? You should be thrilled if you are serious about global climate change — how else are we going to ween ourselves from gas?
