I don't buy the oil company arguments because they were exposed in an article the summer before last in the Kansas City Star as having been shutting down refineries during the '90s on purpose because of too much capacity to make them happy with their profit margins. There was a refinery in a small town in Kansas that was shut down in spite of the town's citizens finding a buyer for it because their town needed the jobs. Now the oil companies blame refinery shortages on NIMBYism. Does anyone really believe they looked that hard for locations for new refineries? I don't. "Unexpected" refinery problems...yeah, right. Just like Gonzales really doesn't remember that he fired those attorneys because they weren't anti-Democrat enough. There is an easing of tension after the Iraq/Great Britian crisis. Speculators are pushing oil prices higher than they need to be. Still, oil is trading at $10 less per barrel than they were a year ago and yet the price of a gallon of gas is about the same. What we are seeing now is big oil grabbing at an issue and pushing prices up artificially high because after such huge profits last year, the demand from stockholders to maintain high dividends/prices.
