[...] While catching up with my daily reading last night, I found part of Donklephant’s reaction to Tuesday night’s debate worth spreading: Who were the people in the audience? The strongest reaction of the night was huge applause for supporting “waterboarding” and torture. They cheered for the expansion of off-shore prisons to hold people on suspicion without trial or protection of the law. This actually happened. I was stunned. Who are these people? Do they call themselves Americans? Do they have the slightest concept of what this country is about? [...]

It appears that a 24-style "ticking time bomb scenario" may be currently underway in Iraq as we speak. 3 American soldiers have been captured by terrorists, are currently alive, but likely to be tortured and executed very soon. Jihadis who were involved in the assault/kidnapping have been detained.

I take the Bill Clinton view on this, which happens to be nearly identical to the Mitt Romney/Sean Hannity/President Bush position. In extreme circumstances, you try everything else that you can first, but if the guys aren't talking, you may need to "work them over," or use "rough questioning techniques," as Bill Clinton calls them.

You don't need substantial changes in interrogation law to achieve this says Bill, which might be a source of some discrepancy between Clinton vs Romney/Hannity/Bush, but morally the positions are the same.
