Video: Bush Finally Gets To Fuel Efficiency
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Energy, Environment, Money, VideoAm I jaded? Oh, you bet. How much progress could we have made if he had pushed this after 9/11?
Still, progress is progress and I applaud these steps. It’s not just key for our economy, it’s also key for winning the WoT.

It’s not just key for our economy, it’s also key for winning the WoT.
Even if the U.S. were to achieve this fuel efficiency goal, how much less demand for foreign oil would that really translate to? Don’t forget that petroleum is also needed to make plastics, which are used in the manufacture of all manner of products, and there’s been no sign of that demand abating either. Yet unless I’ve missed something in the debate over oil, all sides seem so fixated on gas prices that no one has called for exploring alternatives to plastic, or even for more use of recycled plastic. We could someday be energy-independent, yet still as dependent as ever on foreign oil, with all that that entails.

If we reduce our need for oil, oil production will go down. But the first oil production to drop will generally be the most expensive. Which oil production is the most expensive? Lets see…tar sands in Canada, and US domestic production. So the “say no to foreign oil” crowd isn’t likely to get what they want by simply reducing consumption. As long as we use oil, the market will give us the cheapest oil available - and we aren’t going to like where it comes from.

The only reason Bush is even mentioning this subject now is because a number of states are suing the EPA to try to impose their own restrictions on auto emissions, and by pushing it into the national arena Bush hopes to derail their lawsuits.
Never assume that horrible man is doing the right thing (on those rare occasions he does) for anything other than evil, selfish, self-serving reasons.
