It's not like this wasn't predictable. If President Bush were to announce that he was pulling us out of the Olympics, of all things, he would be widely denounced for again showing a disrespect for multinational institutions. Besides, pulling out of the Moscow Olympics because of Afghanistan proved to be a very unproductive move. Rather than castigating the U.S., why not castigate the I.O.C. for awarding the games to such a massive violator of human rights to begin with? It’s not like this wasn’t predictable.

If not, it strikes me as a purely symbolic gesture, which won't hurt China but could backfire on the U.S. The IOC would surely frown upon any boycott, and it would probably be the kiss of death for Chicago's bid for the 2016 Games.
