Ron Paul & Barack Obama Top Meetup Lists
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, General Politics, TechnologyI was curious about who had the most grassroots movement on the campaign trail, and it lead me inevitably to Meetup…the online tool that spawned the Howard Dean movement in 2003.
Needless to say, I wasn’t surprised that Ron Paul and Barack Obama were tops on the list, but what may surprise you is where the other candidates are…or for that matter aren’t.
Here’s a quick rundown of the candidates that show up on Meetup and their stats.
Ron Paul 2008
289 Groups, 11,054 Members, 266 Cities, 278 EventsBarack Obama
70 Groups, 5,813 Members, 57 Cities, 407 EventsJohn Edwards / One America
43 Groups, 9,054 Members, 40 Cities, 1,088 EventsDennis Kucinich
39 Groups, 12,559 Members, 36 Cities, 1,844 EventsHillary Rodham Clinton
28 Groups, 1,881 Members, 27 Cities, 116 EventsDraft Fred Thompson
4 Groups, 33 Members, 4 Cities, 0 EventsJohn McCain
2 Groups, 125 Members, 2 Cities, 8 Events
A couple things to remember. John Edwards and Dennis Kucinich ran last time, so their numbers are skewed. So that makes the Barack and Paul numbers even that much more impressive.
Also, the total number of members represent both people who are in groups and people who want to be in groups. This is where Paul really shines because he has more people waiting to form a group than John Edwards has total people. And this is a guy who has 1% in public opinion polls?
And do note that John Edwards hired some of Howard Dean’s people to set up his “social technology” strategy. This is probably why he’s still hanging tough with Hillary and Barack….but again…does Ron Paul look like the GOP’s Howard Dean or what?
Interesting times ahead…

Speaking of opinion polls:
This petition calls on the major established television news outlets to give fair and unbiased treatment to all candidates running for President of the United States, but in particular to Dr. Ron Paul (R-Texas) who has been blatantly slandered, mischaracterized and marginalized by the mainstream coverage of his campaign to date.

One thing that seems to be missed in all of the analysis -
The CAMPAIGN can’t use the internet to get the message to the people.
PEOPLE use the internet to get the campaign’s message for themselves.
Frudy McRompson and Jillarck Edbamaton could hire every one of Howard Dean’s social network team, and a thousand others besides, and they won’t hardly register anyone on their site, because ..
WE DON’T LIKE THEIR MESSAGE!
Ron Paul had almost no money, and his network is growing exponetially, because …
WE LOVE HIS MESSAGE!
