Bring our soldiers home and put them to work fixing our country. We need to remind ourselves that we are a wonderful group of individuals who, with the right synergy, can overcome anything. Just get the politicians out of the way - find someone who cares more about our country's citizens than about their fellow shareholders' next dividend deposit. We can do amazing things and solve amazing problems. The greatest generation could be spending their time and brain and muscle power solving the energy, infrastructure, corruption problems - starting now!!

It's not that the government is inefficient at it, it's that people like somebody will scream bloody hell at them if they say that they need to increase taxes of any kind in order to pay for the maintenance.

Actually, the government seems to have exactly the same attitude towards "deferred maintenance" as the business world. They both figure that, because they can get away with avoiding the expense for one year, they can get away with avoiding it forever. And then they are surprised when the chickens come home to roost.

You're telling me government is inefficient at maintaining bridges also? I'm starting to question my liberalism.

On the politics of infrastructure, I think it would be more accurate to say that politicians (and thus governments) don't like to spend money on hidden infrastructure. They're happy, ecstatic really, to pass earmarks for a NEW bridge, a NEW highway... anything that gives them a fancy photo-op and that the people can't help but notice. It's the hidden infrastructure that wins few political friends.
